Sounds very Kenny Brunner of this guy. I am sure they have plenty of talent that this doesn't hurt them that much. Calhoun can just pay some other kid to come in and fill those minutes. Did I say pay, I meant give a scholarship & offer "work study".

Just because Calhoun gives $22,000 "stipends" to his players, gives you no right to criticize him.

Was something published indicating UCONN gives players $22,000? over and above Room and Board? is it permitted by the NCAA? or not? Did I miss this story?

thanks for posting that, but there is absolutely nothing in it that says players received stipends. <<After an exhibition game last week, Maryland coach Gary Williams made a thinly veiled reference to a reporter about Connecticut's Jim Calhoun. Williams implied UConn was able to land highly touted recruit Rudy Gay of Capitol Heights, Md., this fall by paying for an exhibition game with the Beltway Ballers, who are affiliated with Gay's AAU program. Maryland had also been ranked high on Gay's list of programs. UConn did pay $22,000 to the Cecil Kirk program, a community service organization in inner-city Baltimore that runs Gay's AAU program and is associated with the Ballers, but seeking and paying exhibition opponents are allowed under NCAA rules.>> This says UCONN -- within NCAA rules -- by paying for an exhibition game. If anything, it implies the money might have influenced the coach to influence the player. There is NOTHING in here to support the accusation that Calhoun gives $22,000 stipends, or $2 stipends to anyone. Many posters on this board may not like Calhoun, Wright, Boeheim, Coack K, whomever, but that doesn't mean that a board affiliated with Georgetown University should be a place where totally unsupported and unjustified accusations are made about specific individuals. Maybe that's just my belief. But I would hope and expect that DFW, Dan and WBH would all share that philosphy.

If you don't like me, just be upfront about it. You don't have to hide behind high-and-mighty ploys. There have been many mentions of Calhoun's "ways" in terms of recruiting and his program on this board. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. But then again, maybe you do.

If I wanted to use some awful metaphoric language, I'd say Calhoun is a slimy recruiter wearing those Docker's "stain resistant" pants--he's dirty, but he always make sure to leave no stains.

It is one thing for someone to suggest that perhaps something underhanded was done (hopefully with SOME level of substantiation), it is another to state categorically that $22,000 stipends are being paid. I don't care for the first, but I find the second totally indefensible. And the_way, I know you read every single post on this board, so you should know you are not the first person I have asked if they had "any substantiation whatsoever" for outlandish claims. There is no hidden agenda. And I am not "out to get you".

Nah, i'm actually all for disparaging Boeheim at any time, substantiated or not! Well, Boeheim's program has been punished formally by the NCAA, so he is fair game in this thread.

OK, guys; let's chill out a bit.
Sir Saxa describes the ethos of the board very well but I have to admit that we exercise far more "strict scrutiny" of commentary on GU coaches/athletes/staff than on that of rival institutions and their staff. Does that mean there's more innuendo tolerated for a Boeheim/Calhoun/Pitino/Huggins/Wright?! Probably so but that doesn't make it correct in every instance.
In the Calhoun case, there's always been a lot of "there's smoke so there must be fire" rhetoric associated with him. Nothing proven but incidents like the el-Amin recruitment and the $22K AAU grant and subsequent Gary Williams rant certainly taint him from a PR/media standpoint. Which is why, despite my censorious reputation(!), I've felt no need to pull the reins in on this discussion. But it is important, as Sir Saxa, to consider word choice carefully....

There is no hidden agenda. And I am not "out to get you". Pssst...hey, Saxa, if you do want to join the hidden agenda -- meet me, Buffalo, SF and some other brothers of the Order by the old elm tree at three crows past the midnight goose. Wear gray and bring a sack of old buffalo nickles. All will be explained.

Uncharacteristically good restraint WBH. hm

Don't look now but your "regime", one by one, will soon fall as a result of my persuasive superpowers. Thats more than a "projection", its the forseeing of the inevitable.
