As many of you know, SFHoya99, SFOHoya and myself (and may include Cambridge and others from time to time) go on a roadtrip every year to see our beloved Hoyas. We always pick a road game and we like to pick B and C markets where we've never been before to experience the "culture." Last year we went to Omaha and had a blast. The year before, Indianapolis and had a pretty good time. The year before, Milwaukee where we always have fun, especially when we convince someone in a bar to drive us to Lambeau Field for a playoff game.
This year, because of various conflicts, we have narrowed down the trip to Hartford and Philly. We've all been to Philly so we are leaning towards Hartford to watch the Hoyas rekindle the rivalry with the Huskies.
Here's what we need from you - - a pro and cons list for Hartford. I'd prefer the list was filled with "pros," but I know this group. ANd yes, we know there ain't much in Hartford. But hopefully we can find some hidden nuggets to get us through 2 nights.
Ready? Go!

Well if you can find that same Bar Patron, The AFC championship will be played sunday night in Foxboro only 90 mins. away. They do in fact roll up the streets on sunday in Hartford.

West Hartford is obviously a few miles outside of the city limits. It has some really great restaurants that are worth checking out. Except for some isolated areas, I do not recommend spending too much time in Hartford itself. Aside from the rising crime rate, it is entirely unremarkable as a city. I would be more than happy to give you recommendations if you let me know what types of entertainment, restaurants, etc you are interested in.

I will be the voice of dissent and say Hartford has a decent, budding localvore scene and some reasonably chill hipster enclaves. Agree that you get a rental car and explore outside the city limits, both West Hartford and the Hoops Hall as mentioned, but you can eat a few good meals in Hartford. www.hartford.com/restaurants/

I suggest staying the Hilton Hartford. It's connected via skywalk with the XL Center. I stuck to eating/drinking at the hotel when I was last there a year ago so I can't recommend any places beyond that.

Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are nearby as well if you're into that kind of thing, plus I think the casinos have attracted some decent restaurants.

If you go, I would consider heading down to New Haven if for no other reason than the pizza. New Haven stype apizza is probably the most roadtrip-worthy thing in the state, and it's about 45 minutes from the XL Center to Wooster St. If you do make it down there, you are then obligated to find yourself some New England Brewing Co. beers - Sea Hag IPA is excellent and pretty widely available around the state (including near Hartford), Gandhi-Bot double IPA is harder to find but worth seeking out at the source if they are pouring growlers at the brewery in Woodbridge, not too far from New Haven but not the ideal hours if your weekend is built around a Saturday afternoon game.

Although I have found that the Pepe's chain locations are still pretty good, I would propose that if you are coming from across the country you should probably make the rest of the trip to go to the original, and try to hit Sally's and Modern, too. Then walk around Yale and hit Prime 16 or Anna Liffey's for beers. You won't be missing out on too much in W Hartford.

I live in West Hartford (within walking distance of many of the restaurants here) and work in Hartford (literally across the street from the Civic Center). If you come to Hartford for the game, we're talking about a weekend trip, right? There are enough restaurants in Hartford to last a full weekend without needing to venture into the suburbs. It's not as if you need to account for twenty meals. That said, if you do want to explore a bit, as others have mentioned, you'll be thirty minutes south of the basketball hall of fame, and thirty minutes north of New Haven pizza.
Also, Hartford is much more in line with your "B or C market" criterion than Philly. (If Philly is a B market, what does that make Omaha?)

Nothing good has happened in Hartford since March of 1982.

Looks like we are changing plans and going to Providence instead. Good choice or bad choice? What say you HoyaTalk?

God, Provy, Philly or Harshford - I feel like this is a question about the Dead's 89 Fall Tour.

I am still lobbying to get you guys to Hartford - if I have to, I will throw in a ticket to see Phil and Friends at the Cap Theater Halloween shows!
