This was the first year in many (at least that an 1980's alum can recall) that the event was not streamed or made available by video. Not sure why.
This is really not an event for the alumni and fans anyway, inasmuch as it's become a de facto recruiting tool that adds the rebuilding women's program in as well. The elder Thompson would never have done this in 1985 (he probably would have called it "foolishness" or some other terms) but again, he didn't have to.

I believe last year's event was also not streamed or made available either. In this day and age, I think it's completely unacceptable. As a school promoting your brand, you want to make it as easy as possible for fans, and more importantly, recruits, to have access to the program. Given that it has been streamed in the past I don't understand why they didn't do it.

It was streamed last year. I remember watching. Terrible that it wasn't available this year for alumni (and many donors) who want to stay involved.

There were several segments broadcast through the new periscope app they started using in Italy.

There were several segments broadcast through the new periscope app they started using in Italy. Let's be kind: Periscope is a poor way to follow live events if the phone is out of focus or (more likely) out of position. It shows a lack of opportunity under the "hey, it's new technology" approach. Put another way: would we be satisfied if the Radford game was put on Periscope?

While I agree that we the fans would like a better quality at home experience for this event, perhaps the staff wants to keep it intimate for the teams and more so for the recruits that choose to experience the event. You want to be part of Georgetowns madness Mr prospect, show up Friday night and experience it live and in person.

So the Royals Jays game I'm watching, should it not be broadcast because I didn't travel halfway across the continent to be there in person?

Really? Is "our midnight madness is not broadcasted online" a selling point to recruits? Sounds Busch league to me.
Also, who thought "one extra recruit may come because this isn't streamed" is valid to upset many committed alums who want to watch the team and get excited for the season and may want to come to our away games?

Cameras allow the recruit to sit at home and doesn't get the staff any potential FaceTime with the kid. Also, Madness night is not a scheduled game which would have contractual rights with a broadcasting company. Two completely different events.

It's about bringing the experience to those who can't be there and expanding your brand.
I can't believe you're advocating for less coverage of your team.

I would like to be shown evidence that recruits who are seriously interested in Georgetown would choose to simply watch online. Anybody who is truly interested in coming would almost certainly come if they were able. And, if they weren't able, you might as well let them follow online. This is 2015. It shouldn't be controversial for something like this to be online. Also, I don't get the "intimacy" thing. The event already has over a thousand people at it. Streaming it won't affect the intimacy.

I believe it was streamed in 2013, but not in 2014: hoyatalk2.proboards.com/post/601428Video highlights were posted in this thread, but there was no indication of a live stream, and I recall that there was none.

So, as this is the recruiting board (and there is another Midnight Madness chain on the main basketball page)...
Any updates on how the recruits enjoyed it?

Cameras allow the recruit to sit at home and doesn't get the staff any potential FaceTime with the kid. Um, no. We've had broadcast MM before. Other schools do it. This is not a good reason. This actually makes it easier to broadcast over the internet, not harder.

Yes, it sure does make it easier, but no one seems satisfied with the quality of periscope. So, let have the university go out and buy a spanky new HD production quality camera, cost in the 6 digits range, and look to improve that for you guys for a couple of hours of entertainment each fall. Seems like a reasonable way to blow 100k.

If JJ was a judge of the dunk contest does anyone know if JJ Jr. was in attendance? One would hope that was the case!

I don't think it would take a high resolution camera in the 100 K range. Just a streaming service that allows full length play of video and a top end consumer camera.

Even if you wanted to use that level of equipment -- which is not necessary -- you could actually hire a crew. I personally don't care; midnight madness is pretty dumb and boring the world 'round. But your arguments are non-sensical. Georgetown has always been crappy at streaming and the big reason is they don't care.
