TC, I expect that we'll see at least one transfer, although I don't have anything hard to back that up. Regardless, it is still early to tell on that front. Nonetheless, it is not like we're talking seriously about losing any of our 2-3 core players like we have in offseasons past. I don't know about you Jersey--but not only do I consider Bowman one of our core players, I think the fact that he's declared for the draft is kinda serious. I don't think he'll go, but, well, I don't want to be a part of the second class since the 70s to never see the Hoyas make the NCAA tournament.

My guess is Jersey was implying that Bowman won't leave, not that he isn't a core player. It seems like we will have 5 of our top 6 back regardless of transfers, losing only DJ to graduation. Adding the four freshman recruits who will be eligible and maybe one or two more... our depth should be significantly improved over last year and our starters will have a full year in the JT3 system (unless one of the freshman plays so well he breaks into the starting lineup). THings are looking up for 2005/06.

After I wake up, I just sit there, curled up in the fetal position mumbling "Please don't go Brandon....Please don't go." It kind of freaks my roommate out.

Has anybody checked the NCAA rules re whether a transfer counts against a teams' scholly limit during the year he is sitting out? It seems to me that the transfer shouldnt count until he is eligible. And from all reports it sounds like DJ is leaving regardless. If both of those turn out to be true, then it's not 4 players fighting over 1 spot, rather its just 2 players -- Wallace & a recruit. Add the possibility that somebody transfers and all of a sudden there are no problems. Somebody needs to get on that NCAA research.

Add the possibility that somebody transfers and all of a sudden there are no problems. Somebody needs to get on that NCAA research. If a player draws down the financial aid of a scholarship, even during his transfer-ineligibility year, then it counts toward using up one of the 13 scholarships available in a given year. As far as a player who is considered to be a "counter", I'm not sure how the revisions to the old 5/8 rule now impact that process. But a "counter" is any player who was at any time recruited by the institution and for the sport at which he shows up and actually plays. Some examples: Case A: Suppose player Nate Robinson is recruited by UW Huskies for football and ONLY football. He doesn't even get an "expression of interest" letter from the basketball coach. He then tries out for basketball once he's enrolled. He makes the team. He is neither a "counter" (wasn't recruited for basketball) and his football scholarship covers his financial assistance so he doesn't count against the 13 allotted for the basketball team. Case B: Suppose Greg Paulus had been recruited by Duke for both football and basketball. Suppose he were to arrive on a football scholarship. Because he had been recruited for basketball (a sport with a lower "capitation" on scholarships allowed under NCAA rules), if he plays basketball at the end of football season, the school must transfer the way it "counts" his scholarship as though it counted against the lower basketball limitation of 13. There were added wrinkles under the now-abandoned 5/8 rule which rendered even walk-ons as "counters" if they had so much as received a single recruitment letter from the basketball coach. But I think "counters" not only played off of that 5/8 rule but also overall NCAA limits on the size that a basketball team can be (inclusive of 13 scholarship players and walk-ons). At schools which like to "redshirt" players for better development, or for medical injuries incurred in pre-season or early enough in the season, those scholarships are still being paid out and count against the limit of 13. Ditto with what used to be called the "Prop 48" players who would come to a school lacking academic qualification, but draw down against the scholarship limit during the freshman year in which they got their academics in order (but didn't play).

The university still hasn't confirmed the PE Jr stories... any word on what the status is? My friend saw him at the Cafeteria this past weekend with JT3. It's not confirmation, but this was after he announced his intent to transfer to Gtown. She was pretty excited--her text message said she felt like a 13 yr old girl at an NSync Concert

Not being an expert on NCAA regulations, I would imagine there are a lot of i's to be dotted and t's to be crossed before a school can comment on a player transferring in. If people know of other schools announcing incoming transfers, it would be good to hear about them, but I feel like the news usually comes from the player end, and that schools often don't comment until the summer.
Does anyone remember anything about Bethel's decision to go to NC State, and whether they commented on it before the summer?

i am not sure if he will count next year. i do know that kansas had a player from USC, Roderick Stewart, transfer mid year and i know he couldnt have counted against the scholy count then because Kansas was full mid-season. he has to sit out the fall semester games but as soon as that is done he can play, thus fullfilling his full season of sitting out.
not sure if that makes it any clearer or more foggy.

If he practices, get instruction from coaches, and otherwise participates in the basketball program, I think he probably has to count. If he just goes to school for a year without officially participating with the team, he might not count.

I thin k Wallace and co. practice, get instruction and participates in the bball program. The question is whether he can be counted as a walk on if he has already recieved a schollie from another school. He can't if he's already recieved a schollie from the school he's currently attending (ie Owens can't be counted as a walk on no matter what), but that doesn't mean the rules are the same for transfers.

See pages 218-228, especially chart on 227: www.ncaa.org/library/membership/division_i_manual/2004-05/2004-05_d1_manual.pdfEdit clarification: pages 203-213 of the NCAA manual, but pages 218-228 in the pdf file. The way I read this, it appears that Wallace has to count if he receives any financial aid at all, now that he has competed, but Ewing would not count if he does not receive financial aid.

There are certain things designated as recruited, and if Lee Melchionni was not recruited, then neither was Jon. Therefore, the bylaw you cited does NOT apply to Jon. He is not a counter. EDIT: after reading Nodak's post and rereading, I think he and bmartin are right on Ewing.

I agree that the chart looks like that if PEJr gets no aid, he is not a counter. Someone who is recruited, but gets no athletic aid and not any other kind of aid at all should be a non-counter.

If he was not recruited and GU certifies that his admission and aid are not related to his basketball ability, then he would not count.
