I've been watching a bit of the U.S. Open, which is now on Fox and was on FS1 from 2-5pm PST today. Some early thoughts:
1) Interesting course.
2) Tiger is just difficult to watch these days.
3) Pretty impressed with Fox's coverage so far. In particular, I like how they use the shot tracker on many more tee shots than I've seen in the past. It's great to be able to see the ball flight.
Anybody have other thoughts?

I agree on all points. It's good to see new courses added to the US Open rotation. How bad is Tiger? On this date 15 years ago, Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open by 15 strokes. Now he’s trailing by 15 strokes and losing to a 15-year-old. Tiger is only ahead of Rich Berberian Jr., whose best prize $ was the $17,000 he earned winning the New England PGA Championship in August. There are 15 amateurs ahead of Tiger on the leader board. Ouch. Haven't watched too much tonight. Does Fox actually have a leaderboard on screen yet?

Fox has been just fine. If anyone wants to complain about it, please remind them that we would have had about 8 hours of Chris Berman otherwise. Really think Joe Buck has done a nice job, especially considering it is his first golf broadcast and he's been on the air for about 11 hours straight. When he tones down the snark, he can be awfully good.

Only had it on in background at office (shhh!), but the course looks great. Great to see guys trying to work through the contours and figure out where to leave their shots. I think Normal has been pretty good and Fox has been good.

I noticed early in the day that Buck was doing a bit more (too much) "play by play" calling - "McIlroy's drive clears the bunkers... lands in the fairway... takes the slope... and ends up in a very good spot." Joe, we know, we are watching the same thing as you. He seemed to have toned it down by the time I was watching late last night. The tournament is off to a good start, strong leaderboard with almost all of the top players at least in contention, aside from Fowler - what a strange sight seeing Rickie, Tiger, and Oosthuizen basically laughing at how poorly they played as they came off the course. There is a chance Dustin Johnson will run away and hide, though. I am sensing a first time major winner, but from one of the younger guys who has been knocking on the door - DJ, Day, Reed, Matsuyama.

I happened to notice that this course has six par fours longer than 500 yards, and both par fives are 600+ yards. Nearly 7500 yards for a par 70 course is wild. It doesn't seem like it was so long ago that any hole over 500 yards was a par 5. But I guess I'm just showing my age again.

With all this complaining about the greens and length, I say: GOOD. These are the top golfers in the world...give them an inconsistent course, hard to read greens, and long pars. I'd rather see these guys struggle and get creative then shoot 16 under.

The problem with the greens is that they are infested with poa annua which means that the players in the afternoon are putting on fairly different and worse surfaces than the guys in the morning. It just too bad that they had 7 years to prepare for this event and still insisted on fescue greens which was never going to work. They should have cut bait on the fescue greens a few years ago and either planted a strain of bent which could resist the poa or gone all poa.
