BENTON, Ky. — Keldon Johnson knew he wanted to play for Kentucky. He just needed his dad to trust him. The 5-star shooting guard from South Hill, Va., signed with the Wildcats on Nov. 11, but Chris Johnson wasn’t convinced that John Calipari’s program was the right fit. Keldon said his dad was pushing for other schools, but eventually they came to an agreement. “I was more for Maryland and N.C. State because they were local and he would have been the man from Day 1,” Chris Johnson told CatsPause.com. “We went back and forth but he was sold on Kentucky. That was where he really, really wanted to go.” Being the man from Day 1 isn’t the path for freshmen at Kentucky. There are usually several men in each signing class who could be “the man” at most programs. Keldon Johnson, the 11th-ranked prospect in the 2018 class, will join 5-star point guard Immanuel Quickley and 4-star shooting guard Tyler Herro in Lexington. Zion Williamson, the No. 2 player in the class, could also be on his way. “He just knows a lot of good players are gonna come to Kentucky and that no slackers come to Kentucky,” Johnson said of his dad. “From Day 1, I gotta fight. I think he was a little hesitant on that, but I know my dad believes in me that I can do it.” www.seccountry.com/kentucky/kentucky-basketball-keldon-johnson-dad-oak-hill

He made the right choice, he'll be a nice fit for Calipari.. Whether he's doing it by choice to prepare for the inevitable change in the one & done rule or he's just been out-recruited by Duke, Calipari has put together a team for the future not the present at UK..

Magic? He's like Michael Corleone telling Kaye that the Corleone Family businesses will all be legitimate in 5 years before they got back together -- yeah, right! I don't appreciate anything about what Cal brings to college basketball, but I do grudgingly credit his ability to exploit every loophole and bend every rule to get what he wants while keeping layers of people between him and any dirty dealings.

Whether he's doing it by choice to prepare for the inevitable change in the one & done rule or he's just been out-recruited by Duke, Calipari has put together a team for the future not the present at UK.. 2 reasons why I believe Keldon made poor decision. 1. This Kentucky team isn't that good and might only have 1 first round draft prospect in what will be a very very deep draft. Unless Cal can sucker the Phoenix Suns or Sacramento Kings into drafting a player or 2 of his again or unless he pushes his current players out the door to the G League or transfer, there will be a log jam of players and Cal I'll be looking to recruit over players in the 2019 class. 2. The NBA changing the 1 & done rule and Calipari has yet to prove he can develop players over time. I have never considered 8-9 months on campus developing players that are only there because they have to go some where for that period of time before they can get drafted. Most of the top tier players that Cal brings in regress the longer they are at Kentucky. Keldon should have gone some where his development is amongst the top priorities and he will be given the opportunity to shine. He really should have committed late to see the complete landscape.

He didn't go to Maryland or an ACC school which makes him a fine citizen in my book. Of course if he had chosen Georgetown he would have been eligible for the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

I hope Ewing holds a scholly for Keldon Johnson...
I don't like to dabble in rumors very much but this one is coming from a very significant source. Calipari's agent has been in discussions with the Phoenix Suns on a 6-8 year ($8-10 Million per year) deal that if agreed to he would accept in late April early May. Final Say on Roster could be a sticking point but it's Calipari's job to turn down. It's being negotiated very quietly as if it was to get out would obviously be extremely disruptive this time of year and he could still opt to stay at Kentucky if he doesn't get everything he wants in the deal (years, money, final roster say) with Phoenix. Take it how you want to.
With the FBI investigation, NBA stating it's going to get involved with the highly elite high school prospects and Duke beating him at his game of 1 & done recruits is my take on why this move is a possibility and in the works...

If that cheater leaves Kentucky I wouldn't necessarily expect the normal exodus of recruits/players. They will make a big name hire to replace him and tons of good coaches will be clamoring for the job. Rightfully so... that school throws a ridiculous amount of money at their basketball program.

I know this won't be popular but they can keep Keldon. I know that he can play but he is a front-runner in my opinion and if playing with your brother in the BE wasn't enough then I say "later". Calicheat got 1 C'ship out of all of those top 5 recruiting classes and these kids treat him like he is a god. I would never send my kid to play for that guy......never....

With the Kentucky players who's names are in the draft that haven't hired an agent and should be returning/pulling their name from the draft, plus the rest of the current roster, the other members of the Kentucky 18 class (which looks like it will include Ashton Hagons), and Calipari's preference to play multiple PG lineups, I pose this question: Has Keldon Johnson already been recruited over??

I thought this too. I was really shocked that Hagans is actually going to reclass after I saw a Kentucky commitment and it seemed as if Tyrese Maxey would've reclassed. Meaning Ashton essentially has to go pro after this year. Keldon is projected to be a bench player on that team. He has not only been recruited over, but if he is not starting his choice seems like the wrong one. He'd be recruited over every year and we might have to have a thread about his transfer in a few years. I hope he makes the correct choice for his career regardless of what it is.

Knox & Diallo are gone for sure so I'd say no.. Gabriel, Vanderbilt & Washington are PF types not 2/3 types like Johnson.. As for Hagans he's more of a threat to Quickley & Green imo..
