Am I the only one who's a bit disappointed in the hires at DePaul and St. John's? As discussed in a separate thread, Leitao is a poor substitute for some of the other names bandied about for the Blue Demons opening. I haven't seen anyone, aside from DePaul administrators, who seem to think this is a good choice. Mullin has had little connection with the St. John's program since departing for the NBA, and has not been around the college game in any fashion except for recent appearances this season. No head coaching experience for Mullin at any level, and is an unfamiliar name to those he will now be charged with recruiting. The comparison to Hoiberg is inapt; Hoiberg was a lot younger, and more memorable to the Iowa State fans, when he came back to coach the Cyclones. I hope I'm wrong, because a strong program at St. John's is important to the success of the Big East. I'm not optimistic at all. I'm fine with Mullin, although I would have preferred Mark Jackson. Mullin add alot of media attention to the press conferences and the Big East over some no name or Masieello type guy. DePaul has no clue. This is the direct result of DePaul's efforts to get rid of the Meyers and alienate the player alumni from the program. Be careful what you wish for.

Mullin is a good outside the box hire. DePaul on the other hand has given up.

As a front office guy involved with the draft, Mullin has undoubtedly kept a close eye on college hoops. He has experience as a pro team administrator and can bring those skills to SJU. And, he has had several offers to be an NBA head coach. He certainly knows a lot about basketball - pro, college, NYC, whatever. And as a NYC hoops legend, I imagine it will be pretty easy for him to connect with local HS and AAU coaches, not to mention he has a national rep as well.
There's a lot of upside, including his intense desire to succeed. Could be great for SJU and the BE.

BE needs a shot in the arm-he could be great or a flop, but as the Hoyagrad son of a former ST. John's player I'm actually excited.

Definitely brings attention to the Big East during the Final Four week. Let's hope the recruiting follows.

Eddie Jordan was nowhere near as good as Chris Mullin. Bad comparison by the writer. Also Mullin supposedly has a monster assistant coaching staff in place.

Yeah yeah yeah - that's his schtick, he hates everything and knows better than everyone. This is the same tool that wrote the column about the evil JTIII who dissed poor Seton Hall by not letting them score an unopposed basket after the Tyler Adams bucket - all from the perspective of watching the game on TV in New Jersey because he was too cheap to drive down or get on the Acela and actually attend the game. In fact, tool is probably too kind. Next.

I suppose if you dig deep enough, Red Holzman is also out there.

Nothing he writes is worth taking seriously. That said, I was thinking the same thing for RU/SHU - so far the Hurleys are still available for next season when the inevitable takes place at each program.

As for the Mullin hire. At least SJU is trying something with a big upside and something that brings energy to the program - unlike Depaul.
Mullin's most important next step will be his staff. If he has a good one, that will go a long way toward his success. I am sure Mullin will be unfamiliar with the nuances of NCAA recruiting rules and how to manage the academic side of things. I am also sure SJU will do their best not to allow him to fail at those things either. I would never question the guy's ability to coach, he has been around the game at the highest level for too long not to know a few things.
The immediate concern is Mullin may have no one coming back next season and will be non-competitive. How will he handle what could be the worst season at SJU? I am looking forward to seeing how this shapes up and I could only imagine he has the attention of all SJU fans/alumni. Good luck to him.

It might not effect you youngsters the same way, but the minute Mulllin walks on the court with his St. John's team the blood pressure in geezers like me will rise. His presence will do more to reignite the Hoya-Redmen rivalry than anything Commissioner Ackerman could do. This will be great for the St. John's program and, as a result, great for the BE.

I love the St John's hire. Mullin will fire up the fan base, bring excitement back to SJU, will get a decent honeymoon but will never be a good enough coach to win big. Perfect combo for a Hoya fan.

The other added benefit is that Mullin has a strong connection to St. John's. If he is successful, I think he is a very low flight risk to leave St. John's for another college program. That long term stability could be key for St. John's, too. This could be a spectacular success or failure. I'm hoping for the former.

I am on board with this being the perfect hire. Frankly, it would be hard for a GU fan to object to another team bringing back a name from the glory days of the 80s. Mullin is a SJU legend and a true hoops professional. He has had success at every level and will adjust to hands on coaching as well as the intricacies of running a program. If kids coming up through NY don't instantly respect what he brings to the table, he can challenge them to a shooting contest. NO - he probably still hits 30 footers with a fist in his face. I still have nightmares about him, so he must be good for SJU.
