Let's be honest. Isn't it great to have a game to play tonight, after all these years of frustration? It will be even better when we win and go to the Sweet 16 against Puke, but man we gotta appreciate our guys for getting here. Time to go beat us some Utes.
The only thing I have been surprised by in the run up to this game on this Board is no Cousin Vinnie references. Maybe we finally got some class like Hoya team has.

I think Hopkins steps up. Hopkins is capable of excellent defensive performances. Even if Josh goes out like against EWU, Hop can get it done in the paint. Poetl is good, but Hop can definitely defend him if he doesn't get into foul trouble. And I won't write Hop's FT percentage from the EWU game for fear of jinx, but will say I was extremely excited when I looked it up. I'd love for the senior to have a great game tonight against very good competition.

I know I will be going kinda far ahead with this post, but this game can re-shape the future of this program - this game reminds me of the 2006 tourney game against Ohio State.
we were underdogs, but we beat them, made it to sweet 16 to lose to eventual national champs (would this time be Duke if there is any correlation?), and subsequently made it to Final Four in the next tourney.
In correlation to the transition between 2006 and 2007, think we have the right pieces to be even better next year (more experienced DSR, Ike, PW, Peak = more experienced Wallace, Green, Hibbert), even though we lose some key players (Trawick, and Smith = Bowman, Ashanti), and adding new pieces (Govan, Derrickson = Summers, Rivers).
If we beat Utah to make it past the first weekend and do better next season, we have another chance to put us back to where we were before. And hopefully JT3 makes use of the prime run this time after not having it utilized very well previously.

I'd like to see the staff post up the Taylor kid some in this game..
DSR & Jabril are pretty good at it and the height advantage Peak or PW would have is worth the risk..
I'm not sure how much Utah has had this done to them through out the year but I do know they won't see it very much scouting film on G'town..
The staff has to give Utah different looks so they can't lock in the defense..

I am looking forward to Josh Smith playing a more classic big, this is where he excels and can actually get the other big in trouble. Need to feed the ball in early and often. I worry more about Hop defending a 7 footer, does OK but not his forte. Maybe Hayes can help there a little if needed. When we played less mobile bigs except Stainbrook, Josh often did his best and a Freshman 7 footer should be well within Josh's command. I feel anyone selling Josh our should look at the whole season. Josh has skills but they do not include chasing an undersized center to the three point line. Hopkins is much better at that role. Hopkins foul shooting could be key as well. Bril's heart will be needed as well today hopefully the unfair comments by the supervisor of officials doesn't lead to early foul calls against GU. While Jabril may have gotten away with a technical, two fouls were given back to EW in the closing minutes, more than neutralizing any advantage. Also I find it interesting that in the last two minutes officials can review a foul call but didn't choose to do so on the clean strip by Jabril yet the supervisor of officials suggested they should have reviewed a call at a time when the policy does not support going to review on a missed call. I am hoping after a few games of spending time on the pine, Peak and Copeland are ready to play to their almost limitless potential!

I'm not sure though - the Wallace, Green, Hibbert group includes two good NBA players, and the best PG we've had in a decade. Not sure guys in our current group of DSR, Ike, PW, and Peak has that kind of potential. What will be underrated is that by next year, DSR should be fully comfortable running the point, after learning how to run a team this year. Add and an improved Campbell, who I'm not sure if you meant to leave out or not, and we should be able to put DSR to the off guard spot more, and that's where he's at his best. Call me crazy, but to me, Campbell has Jason Clark-like potential. Campbell is more of a natural point guard, but his mechanics on his shot are good and his shooting will only improve.

A win tonight puts a spike in the national narrative about GU, JTIII and recent tournament history - it grinds to a halt. Sweet 16 appearances do that for a program like Georgetown. It won't take the sting out of the losses, and the success of Curry in the pros will mean the Davidson game shows on highlights all the time, but it fades.
The Hoyas had a chance against NC State three years ago to make the Sweet 16 - an eminently winnable game - and winning that game alone would have made it easier for the program and the fan base recently even if the FGCU loss occurred the following year. It would be great if they could get a win tonight.
Hoyas need a productive game from Josh Smith tonight. He is going to be in the middle of things. Best thing about the EW win was that it gave some confidence to players - in particular Campbell - who could perhaps take their game to another level this time of year.

DSR has the potential to be the best Guard in our program since Iversen. Peak is a solid starting guard as a freshman showing signs of wearing down after a long first campaign. Tre is improving every minute he plays and is not worn down since he had limited minutes for much of the season. PW and Ike have unbelievable potential including the remainder of this season. The only major question mark after we finish this season is whether next year we have a good 5. Between Hayes and Govan we at least have the potential to have some inside scoring and defense. I absolutely hate looking past this season! If players keep improving today, we have potential to play on!

I am almost positive that the refs cannot review whether a foul call was actually a foul. They can review time and possession questions, identify who a foul was called on and who should be shooting, whether a shot was a 2 or a 3, and flagrant foul issues. Having all of our freshmen contribute would be a huge boost, and could very well get us to next Friday.

Definitely would prob have to be a big making that entry to pull the opposing big out of the paint since they will sag of Josh and Hop in normal instances..

Maybe I'm a PG purist. I'd still take Wallace over him. That guy just ran the team, hit big shots, and is somehow still supremely underrated. DSR is more of the Clark genre of scoring guard that has acclimated himself to the point, and that's not easy. But you may be right about the freshmen - in a couple years, we might look back and in retrospect, see that the team was loaded. See 2011 team... Clark, Sims, Hollis, Otto, Whittington, Markel, Lubick, Jabril, Mikael, etc.

If they pack it in against Smith or Hopkins, the elbow should be wide, wide open for Copeland and White. It will become "pick your poison," and it's up to the youngsters to make the Utes pay.

At the beginning of the game it was all about Harvey and EWU, but by half time Reggie Miller was really loving us, especially Jabril. Jabril's energy and competitiveness is what we lacked in past tournament games. If he goes a little overboard, so be it. We could never have won without him. Just absolutely love Bril and will miss him terribly. Agree. Who takes over the Jabril role next year? Cue Steven Hayes thread.

While I'm as excited as anyone for next year, we still have games to play this year!
Why can't we be Uconn (#7 seed) of last year? Syracuse or Michigan of 2013 (#4 seeds)? We have just as much talent of those teams who went to the final four. We are due! Why not us? Let's beat Utah! Is it 7:45 yet?!

Hello from a lifer Ute fan in Salt Lake. The above assessment of the Utes is quite amazing. You guys know more about us that we do! Really it is pretty spot on. I would add to it a few things: Poetl is on NBA watch yes, but I don't feel he is ready just yet. He can get pushed around quite easily sometimes, perhaps due to being used to playing the softer brand of european basketball. Your center is huge (sorry don't know his name) and this type of player can cause our bigs problems. In fact your whole team looks big and beefy, and teams like that can be a problem for us. The other problem we have had this year defensively is covering athletic/aggressive guards. They either get to the basket too much, or the defense sucks in and they dish it out for someone else on an open jumper. True that some of our guys run very hot and cold. If players like Loveridge, Taylor and Tucker get hot, you guys could be in trouble. But if not, you'll be in very good shape We go through some very puzzling stagnant offensive periods where we don't score a basket for 5-6 minutes. What IS consistent is our defense, which can frustrate teams into turnovers and mistakes. And our star player Delon is always a threat, though he should be a little more selfish because he could score at will most often. Many of you guys are saying the Utes scare you. Well the shoe is on the other foot. You guys scare me. It should be a good game. Thanks for coming and sharing! DaytonaHoya is a sports writer in the SLC area, so I'd hope he knows you guys! Can't wait for the matchup. Good luck! Ha that explains a little.

I know the natural thought is to work the ball to Josh and let him take it to Poetl and get him in could trouble. But I really think the Hoyas play much better when they don't spend a lot of time trying to get Josh the ball. It seems to screw up the rhythm and of course there is always the chance, much too frequent, that Josh coughs it up. Face it, with Josh on the court we become a much slower, less athletic team.
