A biased (obviously by the name) source says that Doherty had to raise money to get his salary up to the range he wanted it in (apparently they only offered $125-140K and he wanted more so he went out and raised it from his NC contacts): www.dukebasketballreport.com/national/1601.htmlThe same link says that FAU averaged 550 fans at home games this past season.

Esh never did a thing other than sit next to JT to merit a chance. Now he's on the short list for worst coach in Big East history. What kind of purgation does Craig Esherick need to go through for you? Do you really think he is solely responsible for Georgetown's decline in basketball, a decline that was already in motion many years before? He was part of it, agreed, but only a part of it. Let's move on, and let him do so as well. Craig was not well served by some assistants, failed to broaden his coaching experience beyond the Thompson playbook, and did not ingratiate himself among the faithful. Conversely, he ran a clean program and did nothing to embarass the University off the court. Esherick took over on the fly and the results proved it. As was stated on this board by some in the past, if Georgetown had planned for Esherick to take over, it would have been beneficial for him to take an assignment at another program to get some experience as a head coach before taking over "back home". If he failed at a Loyola or at a William & Mary, at least GU would have seen it in 1994, not 2004. If he had grown as a coach, it could have paid dividends later, as Mike Brey did when he was at Delaware. In a roundabout way, that's what Roy Williams did and, conversely, that's not what Johnny Dawkins is doing. He awaits much the same fate that befell Esherick without some real experience. Still that "worst coach" in your book was 35-45 (.438) in five full seasons of Big East play as coach. Great? No. Worst? Hardly. Hoddy Mahon, Gordy Chiesa and Kevin Bannon are closer to the top of that list.

Craig was not well served by some assistants, failed to broaden his coaching experience beyond the Thompson playbook, and did not ingratiate himself among the faithful. Conversely, he ran a clean program and did nothing to embarass the University off the court. That is true. And he deserves credit for that. GU has never had a any kind of scandal -- academic, recruiting, or otherwise -- during the entire JT/Craig period. The way things are in college sports these days, there is a lot to be said for that. Craig also deserves credit for recruiting: Jeff, Roy, Brandon and Ashanti, as well as DJ. And DFW, I agree with you that there is no point in dragging Craig over the coals at this point. He's gone. JT3 is here. Things are looking up. Let's move on. If Craig gets himself a job somewhere else, he can use that to demonstrate his capabilities.
