Keep the momentum going. Hopefully the freshmen are a little more comfortable in the Big East now; with 8 or 9 options, we can play a strong game even if a couple of guys are off.

Let's hope the Freshmen keep it up and DSR finds the basket again.

Pound it inside and foul out as many Warriors as possible.

Let's hope the Freshmen keep it up and DSR finds the basket again. The Hoyas have more depth so this is a good idea. Note to DSR and Josh: this does not apply to you. Stay out of foul trouble.

Luke Fischer is the only MU player over 6-07. He does get into foul trouble (four fouls in three of the six games he's played so far), so I would expect that GU will look to go at him early, and get him on the bench with fouls.

I want to see Smith eat Fischer alive (preferably figuratively, but I am open to discussion).

Marquette is rated similar to Creighton in kenpom.
They're playing slower than we are on the season, but they get a lot of their points off of steals in transition. This is what we need to be warry of. They definitely have a game plan of digging in on players driving and on big men. We've been susceptible to this so far so it needs to be a focus. If we limit their looks in transition we should win going away. They're 35th in forcing turnovers 14th in steal% I can't stress enough how important avoiding these steals will be. Hopefully Wojo is vulnerable to our back door cuts like his predecessor, with his emphasis on steals you assume they're over playing the passing lanes a fair bit. They also don't turn the ball over much themselves 51st, so we're unlikely to win the turnover battle.
Outside of turnovers. They shoot the ball very well from 2: 52.5% 39th, but mediocre from 3: 33.6% 169th, and poorly from the FT line 67.5% 206th. Hopefully that will counteract our horrendous FT defense 76.3% good for 349th out of 351 teams! They don't take a lot of 3s: 223rd in 3PA/FGA and 252nd in % of their points they get from 3. Instead they get to the foul line at a decent rate: FTA/FGA: 88th and They're 9th in the nation in A/FGM.
On the Other side of the ball the Golden Eagles are ok at defending the 3: 32.5% 134th, bad at defending the 2: 49.4% 228th, and have a Edited poor FT defense too 70.2% 236th.
While their rebounding stats to date are terrible: 209th (30%) offensive rebounding and 291st (giving up 34.6% offensive rebounding) They've out rebounded both their BE opponents grabbing double digit offensive rebounds in both games even against a much bigger Providence team. It should be noted that they did give up double digit offensive rebounds in those games too even to a DePaul team that was playing with out their starting center. We gave up an unacceptable number of offensive rebounds to Creighton. Can't let them out rebound us like that.

This is a must win if we have any aspirations of being better than 9-9 in conference.
Count me in the camp of being concerned after the first two outings. The horrible, dreadful play against Xavier will not leave my memory any time soon. And our first half against Creighton was poor too. We have some winnable games coming up and we need to take care of these games heading into the Villanova game.

Hopefully that will counteract our horrendous FT defense 76.3% good for 349th out of 351 teams! The great thing about the FT Defense statistic is that it truly shows how random factors can affect performance. I always tell my wife our opponents never miss free throws - it turns out that this stat gives (some) support to my assertions. There are only two teams in the nation that have had opponents shoot better against them on FTs. Of course, there's no such thing as free throw defense, so it shows the random nature of sports, especially when dealing with a small sample size. St. John's, by contrast, has the best FT Defense rate in the country, with opponents only shooting 59.1%. If we traded places with them on free throws, we might have beaten Wisconsin or Kansas.

Free throw defense is not entirely random. Over the course of a season it reflects who you foul. If you are fouling good shooters they will make more than if you foul bad shooters. Generally when your opponents are shooting well from the line over time it probably is because you are fouling guards more than centers. It is related to the problems defending dribble penetration.

Charlotte came in to our game shooting around 57% from the line, yet lit us up for 24-33, almost 73%!
