According to CBS sports' RPI, the BE has 7 teams in the top 50, with Marquette at 104, Creighton at 119 and DePaul at 207. That's very significant. Losses will knock some of those teams down, of course. But, at this point, we are only playing against each other obviously, so it's possible we could have in the range 10-14 games against top 50-100 teams, with several of those in the top 50. That's a huge difference from having to win games against Nova or Creighton last year just to get good wins. And four of those seven are in the top 25! And its critical that even Creighton and Marquette aren't terribly bad, statistically, so the inevitable losses to them aren't crippling. Obviously, it doesn't mean a whole lot if these teams don't perform in the NCAAs. But it's borderline statistically impossible for the league to get less than five bids at this point and six seems most probable. Better chance to make noise in March if there are teams with the ability to make noise in March.... To maximize the league's chances, we basically have to hope that DePaul either loses out or only beats teams otherwise guaranteed of getting berths.

Seven teams in the field of 68 in Lunardi's latest bracketology -- most of any conference. Not worth a hill of beans, obviously (and Provy and Xavier are both among the last eight in the field), but it beats the alternative!

While it is too early, perception does influence reality, and it's great that the narrative that the Big East *could* get 7 teams in the tourney is already becoming widespread. Makes it more realistic that the selection committee could go that route if the 7 keep it up.
I personally think 6 will end up in the tourney, which at the beginning of the season I'd have considered a DREAM result.

Not only would getting 6 or 7 really give us positive exposure, but it also significantly increases the chances that somebody sticks around and makes a run. That's truly what we need.

And his "evidence" for this is that he simply doesn't believe the early success of the BE in the OOC schedule. That's journalism alright!

SETON HALLCoach Kevin Willard said Whitehead will have an MRI in two weeks and could realistically return on Jan. 22 against DePaul, but a source told The Post he will have an MRI exam on Sunday or Monday, in hopes of returning on Jan. 13 against Butler.nypost.com/2015/01/06/seton-hall-enjoying-return-to-top-25-but-remains-focused-on-future/For Seton Hall's sake - and for the Big East - I hope Whitehead comes back ASAP. The Hall is my surprise team for the BE this year.

I agree, but I hope that he rests until he truly is healthy. I want The Hall back, too, for the sake of the BEAST, but I worry about this young man rushing back onto the court.

Unfortunately our win over Indiana doesn't look as good after MSU killed them last night. But I don't care how we get in, as long as we get in. How sweet would it be to be a #9 seed and beat Nova in first round!

Completely agree on "not rushing back" at the risk of his health. But that's what the MRI is for. At any rate, I believe you and I are in total agreement - we would like to see the kid back ASAP, as long as he is healthy, ready to go, and does not present an injury risk to himself.

How sweet would it be to be a #9 seed and beat Nova in first round! We need to root a bit for Oklahoma in the Big XII, to continue with big wins like last night's rout of Texas. By the end of the year, Creighton's victory over the Sooners may loom large for RPI purposes...

Largely on the strength of DePaul's victories, I'm pleased to report that the Big East currently has the best RPI ranking in all the land (albeit by .0001 over the Big 12). DePaul is now in the top 200 and they and Creighton (138) are the only teams higher than 100.

DePaul has some talent. You could see that last year. Now with this hot start, they will start garnering more attention in the Chicago area and perhaps increase their home crowd. Would not be surprised to see a decent crowd for their game with the Hoyas next Tuesday, considering its a weekday.

The silver lining to all of this conference realignment for me has been this multiplicity of identity as both a fan of the Hoyas and of the Big East. Prior to the re-shuffling, I never really rooted for the other conference members during the OOC schedule. Just took for granted that the conference was one of the most respected but now I'm pretty invested and pay attention. Glad to see the RPI is so high. Hope these numbers translate into results in March for the conference. An all Big East Final Four would be hard for ESPN to ignore.

Latest Bracketology from Lunardi still has 7 BE teams in the field, although St. John's is in a play-in game. We're a 10 seed, along with Xavier. So, certainly not anywhere near securely in the field.

Silver lining is that even with 30% chance against the top 2/3 teams that will still get us some quality wins. Usually not enough but I think the rest of the field is weak and a lot will be decided by be tournament performance given the glut of teams. That and I think we should see enough improvement to steal some games.
