Lots to be pleased with today. Josh looks like he has turned a corner with his effort and energy. We still win big without DSR having to drop 15+. Some very nice dishes by LJ to go along with his innate scoring ability which we knew about. While we struggled against the 2-3 early on the ball movement later and ability of both Josh and Mikael to pass out of the double team was refreshing. Oh and how about the big fella going up for the alley-oop?! Excited to see how we do against a significant step-up in competition on Wednesday. Think it will be key to try and push the pace early and often. And if Josh could get Walker in foul trouble that will go a long way towards pulling it out. Looking forward to it! Hoya Saxa!

I'm in the camp saying Copeland will not see much run this year and neither will Cameron or Hayes.
This game gave us an opportunity to see extended minutes for most. Overall a decent game but too many turnovers and too many missed free throws.

Just came over to the bball board after watching the NCAA cross country meet (at least I can see one sport live! - Women 4th, Men 17th). Sounds like the Hoyas had this game wrapped up early. Box score indicates that we had 14 players at one time or another. Looks like another good game by Josh and Peak.

I still think that Copeland will get run this year, but his minutes might become more limited if he does not start to show a little more comfort with the pace of play. Reggie on the other hand, doesn't seem to have learned anything from last year. He is a mediocre jump shooter who adds nothing else on O or D. What is it with JTIII and recruiting jump shooters? They get to the Hilltop and all of a sudden its as if they have never touched a basketball before (Thornton, Nikita, Reggie, etc).

Hayes really needs to find his game, he put the ball on the floor when he should have turned and faced the rim for an uncontested shot. His second touch, he was mismatched with a smaller and shorter SF and he goes and passes the ball instead of taking the kid to the rack. I'm not even gonna discuss his free throws. He's gotta want it and we need him to want it!
Copeland needs to play through contact, I swear it appeared that he threw up two shots hoping that they would go in. His defense is pretty good if you overlook the fouls.
I hope both these guys find their grove before BE play begins, we'll need them to contribute going forward. We've only got a few cupcake teams left to play on the schedule. We'll see the true heart of the team against the Gators.

On the flip side, Campbell looks pretty good, not great but better than I expected. I think he's a mere inch from registering 2-3 3's a game.

Hayes only played one full season of high school basketball, due to (a) growth spurts and (b) a knee injury. So, there is an inexperience factor.
That being written, he's only put on ten pounds since arrival at Georgetown, according to what he was listed at his senior season in Jacksonville while being recruited, and what he is now listed at on the Hoya website roster. He's not been getting the game playing time, but he's apparently not spending much time in the weight room. I've watched him in his admittedly brief appearances this season, and I can't say that he has provided me with any indication that he contribute this season.
I don't see where (a) he has earned additional playing time, and (b) he has to be prepared for a bigger role next season by getting that additional playing time now. If Govan and Derrickson are as good as advertised, they will be leapfrogging Hayes next season. I'll be very happy to be proven wrong, but that's my perspective.

At most, this will be a ten man rotation (sorry, purplefilms and prhoya, but I don't see Hayes in the rotation right now), but Copeland and Cameron may see fewer minutes depending on how they are doing on a game by game basis, and there are certain combinations that we've seen so far that will not be replicated. We'll get a better sense of rotations and combinations this coming week, starting with the game with the Gators. no need to apologize; i don't see him in the rotation much either. but he should be. because there will be days where josh will have 4 fouls with 17 min. to play and the Hoyas are playing against some size inside.

Plus, AB is rapidly becoming my favorite Hoya on this year's team. The guy makes good things happen, whether with a spectacular block from behind or repeated deflections causing a shot clock violation.
I'll echo the good things others have said, with the qualification that PW regressed as the game went on and our overall lack of quickness (AB notwithstanding) concerns me against better opponents.
We won this game on the boards today.
Much better attendance and crowd energy today, but I've never heard the band sound worse.

I had a good view of the bench today from my upgraded seat (thanks ticket office!) and it was clear to me that Reggie was really frustrated with himself today. After he hit that three then missed the next three JT3 took him out and he was sitting on the bench with his head down looking like he had just lost them the game. The coach sitting next to him actually reached over and grabbed his head and made him bring it up to normal level. Then he leaned back and stared vacantly at the ceiling for about a minute. Finally JT3 walked by and gave him a couple of pats on the head and he seemed to snap out of it a little. He needs to stop thinking so much and just shoot. His misses have really got him in a mental funk.

He is still a hit or miss player to me and when he is off, like today, I can't help but think we'd be better off getting the freshman some more time.

I think Copeland will get more PT as the season goes on....I have to think some things will click for him at some point and we'll see an uptick in PT. Cameron should be happy with whatever he gets now...I don't see him in the rotation once things really get rolling. Everyone else seems like they will get at least a decent amount of time. I really wish Hayes was farther along.....I know we are going to need him sooner rather than later and it may not be pretty.

His misses have really got him in a mental funk. He's putting too much pressure on himself to JUST hit 3's instead of trying to become a more complete player. Nothing wrong with a pump fake and a few dribbles for a layup or short jumper. He's a good ft shooter, so he should be trying harder to get to the line if his shot isn't falling.

Couldn't get the game on TV so I can't comment on Hoyas performance today but reading all the posts makes me want to shout "CALM DOWN". We have not only played cupcakes so far but BAD cupcakes. Yes we won and yes our frosh frosh look good but have we really seen any major improvements in our big men? Beating quality teams like Florida and Kansas are going to require Hop and Josh to play at a much higher level and for a lot longer time. What happens when they get 3 fouls in the first 10 minutes, like you know they will. Do we have anyone who can contain other teams quality big men? I like this team and will enjoy watching them play a lot more than I did last years team. But I think we need to temper our enthusiasm until Josh and Hop (or Hayes) have shown they can play with the big boys.

Gosh, we wouldn't want to be upbeat after a win. Everyone! It's very important we be stoic until the Hoyas have beaten a "good" team.

The difference being that sharpshooting is not why Campbell was brought to the hilltop. We have had other very good shooters in the III era--- Wallace, Clark, Hollis, Markel, DSR--- but none of them (save perhaps for Hollis) were recruited largely due to their reputation as knock-down spot-up shooters. The guys who have been brought in mainly to spread the floor, like Reggie, have by and large, been disappointments. And don't get me wrong here team hoyatalk, I am not complaining about this group. I am very excited about our potential this year. Just being a little nitpicky while we wait for our real tests.

i don't know... paul white is easily my second or third fav. hoya at this point. i don't think he "regressed" he still had an impact on the game with plays that aren't on the stat sheet. he rebounds really well and i think he'll be needed to do that when hop gets in foul trouble. he has great timing like Otto.
