Well he's going about it the right way--and applying just like everyone else. He shouldn't have to wait much longer if he's qualified to handle the job and wanted by a school to lead them or Head Coach to help him as an Assistant.

That's a very good point by RDF. He'll be hired if he's a qualified candidate. So far, things haven't worked out well for him at Tulane, Tulsa, NMSU, and maybe LaSalle, but he could have luck elsewhere.
I am not sure how he'd transition back to the assistant's chair, but that remains a possibility.

I think the best thing for him, which is kind of hinted in the article is that he may want to grab an assistant coaches job, in hopes of landing of another head coaching stint. Craig was a respected recruiter around the country for JT2. Maybe being an assistant under another philosophy of basketball will do him some good in having a better chance for another head coaching job. Either that or accept a mid-major job, and work your way back up. Things ended badly for Craig his last couple of years at GU. I don't think any major colleges are going to hire him with the way things ended here. Getting an assistant job for another team may be the best route if he wants to coach successfully for a Major Division I school again.

i know this sounds nuts but what about craig taking over a D-2 school or something and move up that way. since it appears he is not interested in the assistant coaching thing. i think he would honestly work best at an ivy or patriot school where the expectations are not high and academics are king.

I don't see Esh as an assistant coach again. He seemed to relish the HC spot and the power that came along with it, at the expense of some of his assistants.
Anyway, my $.02. It might not be bad for him to go to the HS ranks even because one of his major problems at GU was relating to the players, many of whom came from a certain background. If he is thrown into the fire at the HS level, maybe he can learn how to better manage these situations.

I don't think Esh's main problem was not relating to players from "certain" backgrounds, the players overall liked him as a person. There were some that didn't, but that happens with all coaches, even JT2 (see Kevin Millen, David Robinson, etc.). I think Esh may have been aloof in general, it didn't matter where you from. There are alot of great coaches who are aloof with players. However, the main problem was the fact that Esh wasn't a great head coach and his players weren't getting better individually or as a team from a basketball standpoint.

Yeah, David Robinson said in a quote in the Washington Post that JT2 was the ultimate control freak and intimidator. David said JT2 would always tell the guys that its his gym, his team, his way of doing things, and Robinson said JT2 verbally degrades you in practice. Former Hoyas have said JT2 was always tough on all the guys , while most players could take it some couldn't.

zzzzzzzzing Apparently Mike Jarvis is the frontrunner for the seventh grade girls basketball position, so Esh better not get his hopes up.

I guess Robinson must have been accustomed to being pampered at the Naval Academy. ;D

I don't think any program that feels it needs to "rebuild" will take Esh. I think Esh will end up catching on at a school with a basketball program that expects only to exist and continue the tradition, and any building on that would be a bonus. As someone mentioned, the Ivies or Patriot Leagues might be the right fit.

As someone mentioned, the Ivies or Patriot Leagues might be the right fit. I've said before that I think Esh would be a good fit at a cleaner-upper. If the powers that be at a Fresno State decided to make an about face and run a clean program, he'd be a perfect short term steward in that process. He does a respectable job with getting the players to complete their coursework and act as upstanding members of a college community. Otherwise, I think your advice on Ivies/PL is good as well, although he tends to inflame certain circles with his rhetoric.
