Get ready: the college football season kicks off next week.
Week 1 Picks for Games That Matter:
South Carolina over TAMU (Thursday) Colorado over Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown for the Centennial Cup (Friday) Michigan over Appalachian State in a revenge game at the Big House Boston College over UMass in a Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy* game UGA over Clemson UTEP over New Mexico in a Rio Grande Championship game LSU over Wisconsin
*I just found out about this trophy, which is awarded annually to the best football team in the Northeast. Last year's winner was 7-5 Penn State.
Yours truly will be rooting hard for a real academic school--Rice--to knock off Notre Dame in Week 1. Here's hoping that NBC shows the M.O.B. (Marching Owl Band) halftime routine.

Yours truly will be rooting hard for a real academic school--Rice--to knock off Notre Dame in Week 1. Here's hoping that NBC shows the M.O.B. (Marching Owl Band) halftime routine. The MOB is another example of the sorry state of the scramble band. What they lack in talent they make up for in abject disinterest. SMU is just as "academic" and they can march with sustained effort, while Rice looks foolish by comparison. I'm no ND fan but the Band Of The Fighting Irish is among a select group of the great bands of major college football, along with the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, Ohio State, Michigan, and the Marching 100 at FAMU. The pre-game show at ND Stadium is as good as it gets.

Let's not forget Southern University's "Marching Band from Jaguar Land"! The "Human Jukebox" was recently named the 2nd best marching band in the nation. The Battle of the Bands with Grambling is always a highlight of the Bayou Classic.

I can't speak to the bands, but as the parent of a Rice student, if you really think SMU is just as "academic" as Rice you're sorely mistaken.

Week 3 Picks for Games that Matter:
Marshall over Ohio in the Battle for The Bell for The Bell (duh) Iowa over Iowa State for the Cy-Hawk Trophy Notre Dame over Purdue for the Shillelagh Trophy UTEP over New Mexico State in a Rio Grande Championship game UGA over S. Carolina
There's exactly one game between ranked teams this week. For now, this can be explained as a relic of the BCS era. Whether the CFB playoff structure will actually lead to better early-season matchups remains to be seen.

Memo to UMCP: perhaps if you invested more effort into properly managing your athletic department than you do into having your football team serve as runway models for the UnderArmour Fall Collection, you might be spared indignities like having 20,000+ obnoxious West Virginia fans whoop and holler it up in your home stadium.

When did Penn State and Nebraska join the Big Ten? Before the BE became the AAC for football. It's all about revenue

When did Penn State and Nebraska join the Big Ten? Yeah, I was excited to see what Jerry Kill could do to build on a reasonably successful season, but nothing like getting destroyed by a middle tier Big 12 program to remind me that these are the Minnesota Golden Gophers we're talking about.
