It's a good read. New York has been a home for basketball talent going back 100 years across a variety of ethnic groups, including the often forgotten Jewish communities which produced a large number of major college and and pro athletes well into the 1940's. But why is it failing now? The article seems to confirm that's a confluence of things--fractured teams, AAU influences, aging facilities...in short, better options elsewhere. Maybe it's not that NYC hoops have declined inasmuch as other areas of the country have stepped up and passed it by.

About to read the article. So what are all these kids from NYC playing if basketball isn't a sport that produces talent?

Pretty good article. An eye-opening too. I never realized the gym and court conditions for NYC highschools were that awful. Interesting theory regarding weight training too. Is the Northeast going soft? Almost a shame that the south is producing much better basketball players even though football is king down there. But this topic of the South producing the better physical specimens have been going on for awhile, right? Didn't Nolan Richardson or some other coach make some controversial comment regarding that? Anyway this explains the drop-off of a team like St. John's which both had to rely on a decreasing NYC talent base as well as, at one point, deal with their own underwhelming facilities.

Most eye-opening thing for me was the realization that SHU landed Whitehead because they hired his coach. LOL. I am sure it was noted around here, but I missed it.
Other than that, NYC hoops has not been dominant for years and years. So many more options out there for kids -- not only for NYC kids to go to but for kids from anywhere in the country to go and really improve their games.

I think the two things mentioned that are most relevant:
1) The rest of the country has just caught up. Basketball is not just an urban game anymore and athletics are much more of a business. 2) The good NYC players are leaving because of crappy facilities and the politics.
It's not really shocking.
