This. Only I didn't stay up late. I listened to the third and fourth innings driving home from work last night, and you just couldn't help but get the feeling that Kershaw was really on his game. So I watched the last five innings at home. Just a super dominant performance. Too bad about the error, but that's baseball. Unsung hero was the career minor leaguer who played third last night due to numerous Dodger injuries. You'll often see one really good defensive play that saves a no hitter, and he made it in the seventh on Tulowitski.

AS much as I would like to root for that bozo to take ESPN to the cleaners, sorry, I can't. He's just another jackass filing an idiotic lawsuit.

Have you seen the Yankees' offense and pitching staff recently? Sleeping is the proper response. Nearly unavoidable. Happens to me all of the time.

Same story, different team. Jon Lester pitches well enough to win, but fielding (Lowrie error ruled a hit in the first) leads to a run and his bullpen implodes. Now we get to find out if the Yankees are desperate enough to unload an ARod-like avalanche of cash and years on him.

Boy did the A's crap the bed from 7/31 on. Give up Cespedes for effectively one big start out of Lester. A's and Lester lose that one (admittedly with a big assist from his teammates). Now he walks.
The capper will be if he walks back to Boston.

Either way, A's lose huge on this deal. Probably won't make a movie about this chapter in the boy genius' career.

Great game. It's hard to judge the Cespedes deal for either side right now, but particularly for the Red Sox. If they sign a big time pitcher (either Lester or someone of similar pedigree) in the offseason, then it was unquestionably a great deal from their perspective since they would have gotten Cespedes' services for 2015 essentially for free. In any event, it's hard to criticize an ownership group that has built playoff caliber teams in seven of the past twelve years and won three world championships in that time frame.
Unfortunately for Beane, the lack of postseason success is yoked to his resume and so is that book (which, of course, he didn't write). Without question, he's had terrific success, particularly when you acknowledge (as you must) that the playoffs are capricious and the most any GM can hope to do is to put on the field a team that qualifies for the playoffs with a roster that gives you a reasonable chance of advancing. The fact that they've gotten to so many LDS game 5s (and lost them all incredibly) is a testament to rather than a detriment from (in my view) Beane's success. The Cespedes / Lester deal was an odd one, no doubt. And it's fair to criticize him for it (but not because they lost night; see above re: capricious playoffs). But to me it wasn't clearly (even in retrospect) a terrible decision. They will lose a lot of guys to free agency after this year, so he reasonably could have thought that they will not contend next year and so better to use a trade chip now, when they might be able to win a championship. The guy he got -- Lester -- performed at least as well as they could have hoped. A 2.35 ERA after the trade. And he was perfectly fine last night (not tremendous, but good enough). Unfortunately, their entire team stopped hitting -- surely Cespedes would have helped, but Moss and Crisp both suffered long-lasting injuries too. Again, not a defense of the deal, but I think the notion that it was surely the wrong move is not correct.

Cespedes is simply not that great of a hitter, and Lester was fantastic after the trade.
The reality is that other than Donaldson, that team is basically a bunch of platoon hitters rather brilliantly cobbled together. What really killed them wasn't just everyone going cold, but the bullpen completely failing, just like last night.
Great bullpen work is the closest thing to the key to the playoffs; the issue that it is almost completely unpredictable if you will get it or not. Neither team really had it last night, tho.

But the net of the trade is a young position player for two months and one start of Lester. They could have been bounced without him and still had a young powerful corner outfielder.
Simply stated a calculated risk that blew up in Beane's face.

Simply stated a calculated risk that blew up in Beane's face. It's only one year and two months of Cespedes, though. Cespedes has a really strong arm and a lot of raw power, but he's more a good player than a great player. And given his impending free agency, he was going to get traded for 2015 anyway. And now we'll see if he can match Cespedes' production with the $10M in salary he's opened up as well. So yeah, it didn't work out, but it was a worthwhile risk.

Everyone seems to forget the lynchpin of that trade: Jonny Gomes, whose MLB championship streak came to an end.

Trading Addison Russell to the Cubs was the big gamble. He wasn't going to contribute to this team but he's the kind of guy they want to build around for the future.
