www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A23699-2005Apr3.html?nav=hcmoduleAccording to the Post, they've offered it to him, and he's close to accepting. Odom is a good coach, but it strikes me as a very conservative choice for a school that might not have that luxury at the moment. With a new facility opening up, is the 62 year old Odom going to be the flagship of the program? Can he recruit effectively? We shall see...

It seems to me they're choosing postseason play every year over a shot at being in the tournament every year. You know what you're getting in Odom--a coach that will keep your team competitive (read at least NIT) every year, but not one that will have your team competing for the ACC title/going to the NCAAs every year.

i am baffled by this. he is only going to be there 5-10 years and then he is gonna retire. i guess they like what he did at Wake about a decade ago. they should have gonna after a young gun that is going to get the program excited again.

I disagree with the above sentiment.
I think my surprise is not that UVA would want Odom but that Odom would want UVA. I would think he would be the best candidate that they could get.
As for whether he could get UVA competing for the ACC title every year, that may be a task that no available coach could successfully complete. But I'd give Odom as good a chance as anyone. He was responsible for turning Wake into a national (and ACC title) contender in the 90's.
I'm just not sure why he would leave the ACC to go to the SEC and then go back to the ACC four years later.

Sorry FOTG, but Tim Duncan turned Wake into a national contender in the 1990's. Credit Odom for recruiting him, but he's one of the best players in college basketball over the past 15 or so years, and he stayed for 4 seasons. Odom got lucky on that one.
Again, good coach, but he seems like a placeholder type really. Is he going to excite anyone? When he left Wake, the fans couldn't wait to be rid of him.

Odom will recruit the second-tier player, and then coach him into a good player. He has had trouble getting big recruits down at South Carolina. I'm very surprised that Virginia would want him. The SC fans are not too broken up by his impending departure, as their recruiting will likely improve next year. Strange choice.

ESPN is reporting that Odom says he isn't interested.

And UVA moves to the C list candidates...
I can think of one who would do a good job there.

Is Karl Hobbs not even being mentioned for this job? That seems pretty crazy if so.

Is Karl Hobbs not even being mentioned for this job? That seems pretty crazy if so. Karl isn't going anywhere for a while. He just signed a three year extension last month that will take him through 2010-2011. gwsports.collegesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/030105aab.html"Karl Hobbs has brought respectability and a renewed spirit to the GW men's basketball program," said GW Senior Vice President Robert Chernak. I'd say that's about right. One of the reasons I'd love to see these two teams play is the battle of the two coaches--Thompson and Hobbs--that have brought the respectability and spirit back to their teams in DC. Plus, Thompson vs. Hobbs has a better ring than some of the funny-in-retrospect matchups I've seen/watched in the past four years: Esherick-Gillen Esherick-Lavin Esherick-Doherty Esherick-Amaker

I'm not saying Odom is God's gift to coaching, I'm saying he's better than anyone else they can get. UVA is not much of a stepping stone, and beggars can't be choosers.
At this point, if I'm UVA and I can't get a big name coach, I'd go after Dave Leitao.

There's a rumor floating around their boards from an Internet source that Odom to UVA is pretty much a done deal. Make of it what you will. The UVA boards, to say the least, aren't exactly enthused. The Kool Aid drinkers among them are hoping for Beilein, Pitino, Barnes, Tubby Smith, or someone of that caliber.

Upstart coaches have been signed before and left. There are clauses in contracts. If his history of coaching indicates anything, he won't be around GW much longer. You can only get so far with GW. If he keeps doing what he is doing at GW,I think in 2 years or so he will be coaching a team in one of the major conferences, Big East or ACC.

nothing makes me laugh harder than uva's struggled. my favorite paragraph is this one.
Or maybe he already has. Virginia has tried to hire everyone else. The Cavs wanted Tubby Smith and Rick Barnes. They wanted Mike Montgomery and Rick Carlisle. Those are four strong names to be pursued by a school that, with the exception of the Ralph Sampson era, has exactly one regular-season ACC championship in 52 years.
and i love the previous post about drinking the kool-aid. i have about ten friends who go their and they are all just as high as these wishful thinkers and one of them is a manager on the basketball team. i hope they get stuck with odom. my friend thinks that they actually have a legit chance with tubby because their AD is good friends with him. wow. why would he leave a top 5 program for a top 75 one.
thank you UVA for making my day a little brighter.

Odom has been playing word games in the SC media all week. I think he's pushing SC to get an extension (he only has 3 years left) for recruiting. He left Wake in a similar situation when he didn't get the extension and he could very well go to UVa if he doesn't get extended now from what I'm hearing. A large number of big donors at SC have forgiven Bobby Cremins for backing out on them before and they want to hire him for the job so they can have an alum and a link to the McGuire era to try to bring back the legacy of the program after the estrangement of many players from that era (e.g. Zam Frederick went to GT (his dad played for SC) and Mike Dunleavy reportedly wouldn't let Jr. consider his alma mater.)

Odom is having a 345 presser today in Columbia - expected to announce he's staying at SC (no word on an extension.)
