CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia men's head basketball coach Tony Bennett announced on Thursday (Sept. 3) that Mamadi Diakite is joining the Cavaliers' program.
Diakite, a 6-10, 200-pound forward from Conakry, Guinea, has signed a financial aid agreement with Virginia after playing the past two seasons at nearby Blue Ridge School in St. George, Va., for former head coach Bill Ramsey. Diakite is enrolled at UVa for the fall semester and will redshirt the 2015-16 season.
This is a good move by Bennett imo.. I'd bet a chunk of change he does the same thing with Jay Huff for the 2016-17 season..

This was an alternative to a prep year. The kids credits still haven't transferred due to some translation thing. This is less about what is right for the kid and more about what was convenient for all parties. I wouldn't read too much into this.

He needs at least 2 years (if not more) from now to be able to play at that level. We should have done the same thing last year with Trey!

I like the option of redshirting certain players and think UVA sues that tactic wisely.

He was a 2016 kid, who'll be skipping his Sr. year of HS the same way Domingo did.. Why would he need to prep a year Columbia?

He was a 2016 kid, who'll be skipping his Sr. year of HS the same way Domingo did.. Why would he need to prep a year Columbia? The difference with this kid and Domingo is Diakite is already 20 years old (1/21/95). Domingo was still 17 coming off a USA U17 World Championship when he stepped on campus. Mamadi Diakite Draft Express I really wished we incorporated redshirting kids as freshman if they aren't ready to play. Just in the last few years that list would include Henry Sims, Domingo, Hayes and Trey Mourning. I think if Hayes had another year after this season, we would be solidified at the post position and Bradley Hayes is just coming into his own. Trey as a redshirted freshman this year would be huge going forward. His impact over the next 4 years would be tremendous. I think Domingo could have benefited from sitting out a year and letting his physical and mental maturity catch up to his teammates. The cherry on top would have been Henry Sims who barely played as a freshman, having another year of eligibility after what he did his senior year. Imagine a redshirt senior Sims during Otto's sophomore year when we had no post scoring presence on that team. I know with the 5th year free agency rule (graduate transfer), coaches maybe hesitant to redshirt a kid and watch them leave as they are peaking. I would rather deal with that problem as it comes. Bowen could have transferred and played more (should have played more) then he did last year but he loved being a Hoya and knew the value of a Masters Degree from Georgetown.
