Plus playing a team like Creighton Wragge would be on the bench in foul trouble if Josh was playing. He is no way could play center against us so Smith causes the other team to foul as well cause they cant keep him out of the paint

Agree with this completely. Said the other day that I was curious to see how the team finished the season after the loss to St. John's. Others thought I was criticizing effort when in fact I was more focused on discipline and game "smarts." Last night was not a good sign. Starks and Lubick did not play well at all and they are the leaders. DSR, Trawick, and Bowen play hard all the time, but DSR is not a good defensive player and the other two are limited on offense. The single most disturbing aspect of this season has been the inconsistencies on defense. The fact that they have had good defensive performances is making it worse. It would be easier to just accept that they cannot play defense. JT III has not done a good job, even though he clearly has been hampered by missing pieces, failure of certain players to develop and academic problems. His coaching credentials speak for his talent. However, he cannot escape crtiticism for this season. He simply has had a bad year. He recruits the kids. He is in charge of player development. He is in charge of game management. I agree that this team has limited talent and the coach cannot manufacture points from the sideline. I do not agree that this team is as bad as it has looked at times. The failure of the team to stay composed and disciplined (particularly on defense) at key times is shocking. I wouldn't suspect anyone would give him accolades cause of how this year went. He went all in on Josh and lost. Just adding Josh smith probably turns 4 to 5 games from losses to wins. We get no half court paint points. They fact we arent getting blown out consistently shows how effective an offensive player DSR is. This may essentially be the same team but last year we won alot of close games. Otto makes that big of a differnce and if Greg didnt get hurt and Josh was here I think we'd have 23 wins right now. The margin is that close in college basketball. You had said JTIII has "gotten a ton" out of this team, which I took to be an accolade. Maybe I misinterpreted.

I did in a way. I was giving him the props of winning as much as he has because this is by far the least talented team he has had even his 1st year. I wouldnt say I'm happy with the results but I choose to sometimes view things beyond a w/l paradigm. People who do view it that way I'm not downing or saying I'm more nuanced. I understand looking at it that way cause its whats most important.

The most amazing thing about this season is we beat Michigan State, Kansas State, VCU, St. Johns and Providence and hung tough with Villanova.

The most troubling thing is how bad the defense has been the last two games. You can't win ugly if you don't get stops.

The secret right now with GU is, sure they guard the perimeter pretty good, but they can be driven by, and in the paint, easy pickins - who's gonna stop the middle? Hopkins? or, we can just kick it out for open shots (like MSU and SHU). Inside presence needed IMMEDIATELY. only other way for this team to win is to push the ball much more instead of being bogged down by running "their stuff". It was funny seeing DSR play the role of big man trying to setup back door cuts...

I don't know what games you've been watching but the perimeter D has been really bad. Also, what is needed is for Markel and DSR to shoot lights out plus a credible offensive presence in the middle. The defense is suffering due to the rotation because of fouls for the most part and horrible defensive switches. The match-up zone has been really painful to watch. This was not going to be a great defensive group anyway. But the glaring lack of offense is even more detrimental.

It's been said before but this teams success this year was built upon the defensive effort they were able to give that night. Last night I did not see that intensity. To be fair to the team the wins that were had were done by the team discouraging the opposing team from going inside with quick double teams when the ball was thrown in to the big and being lucky that the outside shots of guards and wings were off. This accounted for the wins over K State, Butler, SJ, and MSU. In the last two loses the teams have pounded the ball inside despite the double teams, making the defense contract even more, which leaves more wide open shots for guards and wings because the spec was too much to recover for the Hoya defensive player. Unfortunately the opposing guards and wings have been hitting that open shot the last two games. There really is not much more III can devise to cover up for the lack of individual ability on this team. There is not one player on this team that can cover an opposing player one on one. Now that the defense has become average, and teams are able to score in the sixties and seventies, the inability to score outside of Markel and DSR is highlighted even more. I have been critical of III but this has been one of his better coaching jobs this year. If any fault can be assessed, it is his or his staff's evaluation of viable talent at the 4 and 5 positions for the past four years. Now, before people start calling Otto's name, he is a 3 who played the 4 position out of necessity for the Hoyas. There is not one big on this team that would be a starter on the top ten teams in the country. They are all at best role players, who witha more talented team could provide valuable minutes off the bench for a top ten team. I am always amused at those who keep saying that the Hoyas can still make the NCAA, while at the same time calling for more playing time for Hayes and Domingo. The way the Hoyas are presently constituted the two are not compatible. With the talent the Hoyas have coming in next year, I would hope that III would use the remainder of the year to play and evaluate under fire, Hayes, Domingo and Cameron, to see just how they will blend with the talent he has coming in next year. You always strive to get to the Tournament, but that is not a realistic goal this year, so you use the remaining games to see if these players can be viable role players their remaining years at Georgetown. As for Smith. I just do not see him, given his track record the last three years, duplicating Hibbert's work efforts to get hisself in playing shape to help this team return to championship level. Without a much improved ability to move laterally and rebound, the positives he would bring on offense is outweighed by his defensive and rebounding deficiencies. I would love to be pleasantly surprised, but the realist in me doubts it.

Obviously they've regressed lately. But I agree it doesn't seem like they are just looking at it face value.
