One more strange thing I just realized: with their loss tonight Maryland finished the season with the same exact overall record as us: 19-13.
South Carolina's record also currently happens to be 19-13, but that will obviously change.

As a Hoya fan and also a future student of South Carolina, last Thursday was a painful experience, but I'm glad they took care of the Twerps tonight. Hopefully G-Town and USC will not meet again for at least 4 years!

At least there used to be.

I'm pretty sure they actually cut the third place game this year... there's no mention of it on the NIT web site, and it doesn't show up in scheduled college basketball games for tomorrow (though the SJU-USC game does).

Gamecocks are roosters that have been bred for fighting. The South Carolina connection relates to Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter who was nicknamed The Fighting Gamecock. Teams at SC were originally called the Jaguars until a sportswriter used the term Gamecocks to refer to them around the turn of the 20th century. PETA has already tried to get the school to change its mascot and barring that remove the spur from the claw of the gamecock.

Wow, another meaningful fight by PETA. The world will surely be a better place if the claws are removed from the South Carolina mascot symbol.
By the way, thanks to everyone for not piling on my prognosticating skills. I'm THRILLED to be wrong!

In the first half MD played some of the worst basketball I have ever seen in my life, the shot selection was unbelievable (like the threes that hit glass and nothing else). It wasn't a mail job but the players obviously weren't taking the game too seriously. Not a good thing.

After watching many of the Nit games over the past couple of weeks, it became clear to me that Maryland has by far the most gifted team. Even in the earlier games, they got far behind, then began trying and pulled away. When they put out the effort on the floor, they can beat anyone. I really wonder what that team could do if it had JT3 coaching. Luckily for us, they continue to play like last night, and those clemson games. It really makes me apprieciate our team's effort and likeability.

If he had the game he had in their NIT wins earlier in the season against Clemson in the College Park and ACC tourney games then there's a good chance the Terps would have been in the NCAAs and lost to a mid major in round one.

I remember Georgetown beating Minnesota in the semifinals, and I beleive they went on to lose in the 3rd place game. I can't recall the winner though.

For some reason, I remember the ending of the Texas Tech-St. John's semifinal having some twist to it, like Texas Tech blowing a chance for a final shot and the win. It was on before the GU-Minnesota game if memory serves. (EDIT: Upon further review, St. John's won 64-63. TT was running down the shot clock on their third to last possession and Marcus Hatten stole the ball and hit the winning layup with 16 secs. to go (yeah, he'll do that to you). He missed two FTs after being fouled after the next possession, but Tech did miss a three at the buzzer. And the SJU fans stormed the court...which would mean they did that after winning BOTH NIT Final Four games. YEE HAW!!!)

Yeah, I remember that because my dad (TTU class of '69) and I were rooting for a Tech-GU final. After the Hatten layup, he quickly switched his allegiance to the Gophers (he's also Minn. DDS class of 70-something) in order to still be able to root against GU. So I got to gloat that my team had gotten to the finals over two of his.
