Nova almost pulled that one out...The travel call sealed the deal. Not a good call at all. For the refs to cost Nova the game like that was horrible officiating. And that's the last time I listen to the announcers. I mean, I should know better than that.
[edited b/c I saw the replay again and realized how bad a call that really was.]

Raf, I love you man, but you let me down agreeing with that walk call on Ray - I mean that was so blatantly not a walk - just a terrible way to intervene in an outcome of a game that close on such a questionable call...
a tragedy - 'nova showed a lot of heart

HORRIBLE CALL.
Absolutely attrocious.
Anyone who knows me knows I hate Nova for personal reasons but thats one of the worst crunch time calls in an NCAA game I can remember. It should have been a hoop and a foul to tie the game. That made the difference. After seeing the replay, it was again blatantly obvious that it wasnt a walk, or anywhere close. How can you call a walk in that situation unless the guy takes like 6 steps? And then the announcers totally agreed with it, counting it as 3 steps multiple times when it was OBVIOUSLY two. Lundquist is a homer. Really just a horrible call and horrible way for Nova to lose this game.
At least Duke lost.
If Jessie Sapp is 8/10 the player Kyle Lowry is, well be in solid shape.

Not a travel, but not a hoop and foul either.
It was a foul on the run by that caused the move to look so awkward and get the call. It should have been 'Nova at the line shooting two.

That would have been a fine call. Or just swallowing the whistle on that play (basket counts, no foul). While an and1 situation would have been a worse call than the previous two situations, it still would have been better than calling a travel.

Correct - shoulda been a classic "good no-call" with the shot going down, and 'Nova back on the press. Goddamn... I LOVE Raf and think him and Vern are the best thing CBS has going for them come March, but he kept say "one, two, three steps... yup, that's a travel" and I kept screaming "WHERE THE HELL DID YOU LEARN TO COUNT???" Clearly picked up the ball, right foot came down, left came down, right was in the air driving up to help him elevate for the shot... not even CLOSE!!! to a third step. Wow. 'Nova got shafted.

I'll eat my share of crow this morning; Nova pushed around UNC in the first half like it was a rag doll. The talent made the difference in the 2nd half but Nova was robbed on the traveling call. That and virtually no Allan Ray and literally no Sumpter.
Nova is elite eight or better next year. And somebody in Chapel Hill needs to light a fire under that team....

I think Raferty and Lundquist are GOD AWFUL together. Last year we were subjected to a Homoerotic Verse of Chris Duhon's greatest moments at Duke with the ending "WHAT A PLAYER, WHAT A MAN!!!" from Lundquist and Raferty kept schilling for the Dookies as if he's an alum.
I love The Raf, but he sucks when working with Lundquist.
BTW, what's with the NCAA's obsession with New Jersey? They love using the Meadowlands which most consider one of the dumpiest, most pathetic arenas in the sport, they have all kinds of announcers with NJ ties, Raferty, Spanarkle, Ian Eagle, Mike Gminski, and most of all they WORSHIP New Jersey's state University--DUKE. The ties from NJ to Duke and vice versa are endless and quite odd but it also makes sense of how many times the Dookies were placed in East Rutherford as it's their homecourt.

Maybe I'm bringing up an old thread, but I found this on the Nova board and just thought it was worth mentioning... It's an excerpt from some article, an article I wish I could cite better but the poster over there didnt cite it well himself.
"But while North Carolina defender Melvin Scott was pointing to the floor in an appeal to an official that the foul had come before the shot, the call turned out to be traveling on Ray.
Scott had bumped Ray as he split Scott and the Tar Heels' Rashad McCants.
'I fouled him,' Scott said later."
Excerpted from a different NY Post article:
Scott: "I heard the whistle, and saw him (O'Neill) point to the ground and thought OK, at worst we are still up 1"
Felton: "It should have been a no-call"
Really unfair for the 'Cats, (who, for the record, I dislike more than any other Big East team) especially since they didn't have their best player, and in my opinion, stepped up even moreso.
Does anyone think that the referees were a bit biased? I could definitly see CBS and the NCAA wanting Carolina in the Final Four, because of the name recognition and sizeable fan base they bring... Additionally, Felton, McCants, Marvin Williams, and especially Sean May are practically household names.... Randy Foye and Kyle Lowry are not. It'd also give them the chance to hype May and Williams, win or lose, who are likely to be back for one more year (Williams up in the air).
I'm still just Editeded because I would have loved to see the entire ACC swept out of the tourney in one day, while 3 NBE teams went onto the elite 8, and likely 2 (Nova and Louisville) went to the Final four, along with 2 Big ten teams... I would have loved to have heard Dickie and all the ESPN Boys eat crow about how the ACC is by far the premiere conference in America.
Oh well... Go Spartans and Cardinals.

Unless it was a jump stop, you only get one a half steps, not two and a half steps. Once you complete the second step, that's a travel.
