Correct, no Bowen or Moses on saturday. Bowen played friday - I was not there, but others reported he had a big game (20+) Thanks. What exactly is going on with Moses this summer? He seems not to be playing regularly. Is it the team he was on or is there some other issue? I think that a healthy and productive Moses changes the equation dramatically for this team during the upcoming season. He frees up Hopkins, Smith and Lubick and buys time for Hayes to develop. Also allows Cameron to play his more natural position at the 3.

SUNDAY GAME NOTES:
-BOWEN (23 pts, 5 rebs, 2 assts, 4 st, 2 bl, 2 TO) Outstanding game from Bowen. In the second half, A Wash started trapping at halfcourt. Bowen got steals, fast break finishes (usually impressive dunks), and transition assists. He looked really, really good playing this style. But his halfcourt game was solid as well. He was confident and aggressive, consistently getting to the rim off the dribble to finish or get fouled. His shot looked very solid - consistent form, good rotation. He hit some jumpers, and was 4-5 from the line. He just missed a flying putback dunk. Another extremely impressive performance - his play the last two weekends has been the most athletic, effective stuff from a Hoya since the Ewing jr. days.
-MOSES: (16 pts, 20 rebs, 1 bl, 3 TOs) Very solid game. Offensively, he struggled to finish over Gus Gilchrist in the first half, but had more success in the second half. He had 7 offensive boards, 13 defensive boards - great work on both ends, especially playing against a solid big like Gus. he also defended Gus well in the second half, after struggling a bit to contain him off the dribble in the first half. There was one sequence that I found especially interesting - Moses challenged a jump shot from about 12 feet in the lane, than moved very well back to the basket to grab the rebound of the missed shot. He did this pretty regularly in Kenner games before he tore his ACL, but had not shown this kind of athleticism much since then. If he can move this well on defense consistently, Moses can be a real asset. He'll never be a go to post scorer, but he was finishing on dump offs and putbacks pretty well. That is all we really need from him offensively if he plays solid D and boards well. Moses did commit a lot of fouls on Gus - his minutes will likely always be limited by fouling. But once Josh is playing, and with Hopkins likely to play some minutes at the 5 even after Josh is playing - Moses does not to worry too much about fouls, we just need 10 or so minutes a game. we'll probably need more like 20 minutes a game from him early on, before Josh is playing. That might be asking a lot.
DAVID ALLEN: (4 pts, 1 reb, 1 asst) Very limited minutes for Allen, as A Wash had lots of players (including Kenner Hall of Fame veteran Isaiah Swann, playing his first game of the season). Swann did not do too much, but he has put up some incredibly entertaining games in recent years in the Kenner league. I expect a fun game from him in the semis on saturday - he always seems to really enjoy the Kenner playoff games. Allen got off his threes despite playing only a few minutes, but went 0-4. Nobody will ever accuse him of being shy about firing up his long jumper!
TAKEOVER: played a very competitive game against Premiere Athletics (PA for short). PA is about the only kenner team that actually seems to have a game plan. they have not stars, but Drew Washington (Delaware) is a solid, vet guard who runs the team. They do a nice job in half court offense - isolating Washington, who can usually beat his man going left; or posting up effectively. They like to play pressure D as well, and they play with energy all game, with their coach very active. They are fun to watch, despite not having any "star" players. Takeover, on the other hand, is a Kenner all star team, with lots of former Takeover stars - Hopkins, Grant (syracuse), Mo Creek (indiana, now at GW after some bad leg injuries), Josh Hart, Stan Robinson. Plus Jabril. This game felt like a hoya first round game - scrappy, smart underdog vs. a 2 or 3 seed. PA got a big early lead, and takeover scrapped the entire second half to come back from a 16 point deficit. Lots of energy and passion, a number of Ts (Jabril got one, of course!), physical and a bit chippy, lots of tough calls for the refs. Takeover came back to tie (may have even gone up 1 at one point), but PA eventually held them off.
-HOPKINS: (13 pts, 11 rebs, 1 asst, 1 st, 5 TOs) Really struggled to finish inside early - lots of opportunities (he had 7 offensive boards), but even with no real big guys defending, he struggled to finish. Again ran the floor really well. Had the highlight play of the game, going way over the rim in transition to catch a too-high lob from trawick - he got his left hand on the pass and directed it into the hoop. Hopkins has run the floor really hard all summer, and has been pretty effective. He also put the ball on the floor to start the break after a few defensive boards - no disasters that I can remember, but I'm not sure that this will be a preferred move during the regular season! Hit 5-6 from the line, Hopkins has settled in as a decent 70% foul shooter. Not great, but not the kind of big man foul shooting that will kill you. He is pretty good at drawing fouls, so it is helpful that he can hit a decent % from the line.
-TRAWICK: (5 pts, 1 reb, 3 asst, 1 st, 1 to) Kind of a quiet game from Jabril. he played fine, but was not getting/creating opportunities to attack the basket as often as usual.
-CAPRIO: (5 pts, 7 rebs, 1 asst, 1 TO) Not too many minutes for Caprio on sunday. He is a real good rebounder - positions himself well, goes up strong.
-JOSH SMITH: did not play again, was not in the gym.
-DSR: (34 pts, 5 rebs, 5 assts, 3 st, 1 bl, 3 TOs) with Josh out, he came out very aggressive offensively. He was getting to the basket and finishing regularly. Also hit 2-4 from 3, his jumper settled down over the final few weekends after he struggled with it for the first part of the summer. As I noted in the saturday write up, he is a lot more comfortable looking for his own shot than playing true point guard. All 5 of his boards were offensive, and he got putback hoops on most of them. Got to the line a ton (12-13). Very impressive final two weekends this summer for DSR, once he went back to looking for his own shot.
-CAMERON: (18 pts, 6 rebs, 1 TO) Reggie had a wrap on his right wrist during the earlier games, but played with no wrap, and seemed fine. He hit 4-8 from 3 for most of his points. He hit a few 7-8 foot floaters along the baseline as well - pump fake, one dribble floaters that are a nice complement to his deep shooting. He is not athletic enough to finish at the rim against solid rim protectors, but he is smart enough to know that the pull up is a good option because of his height and soft touch. Defensively - he often covered Danny Sumner, a decent player who graduated from William and Mary a few years ago. He did not close out well, and Sumner nailed quite a few 3s. Reggie is fun because of his shooting, but the defensive limitations, and a pretty narrow offensive skill set - makes him less effective than he might seem, because it feels so good when he is draining those long threes. But he plays generally "smart" basketball, and should improve on the other stuff (beside shooting) over time. We should not expect him to step right in and play a ton of minutes, but he'll be a useful piece early on because of his shooting. Hopefully over time the rest of his game will come along. One final note on his shooting - he really is an exceptional deep shooter. I think he is probably as good a deep 3 point shooter as we have had since Wallace - and at 6'7 or so with a quick release, he really is a weapon as a deep shooter.
BRANDON BOLDEN?: I believe that Bolden was in McDonough for the games on sunday. A very tall, thin guy with dreadlocks was warmly greeted by the hoya players - I am almost positive it was Bolden. If so - good to see that he still has positive feelings towards the program
JAMES ROBINSON: I am pretty sure that James Robinson (Pitt pg who played for Takeover) was in the gym for their game, with a few other current/former Takeover players and coaches/parents.
NEXT WEEKEND: I am not sure that I will make the games next weekend. I have a long drive to campus (almost 2 hours), so with Bowen and Caprio the only Hoyas alive in the playoffs, I may pass on these games - although I'll probably be there saturday (largely to see Bowen, who has been so impressive recently), i doubt I will be there sunday. I may stay home to watch the PGA! So anyone else who is there, notes on Bowen/Caprio would be appreciated!

vv83, the wait was worth it, my friend. Excellent coverage on all of the games--especially after reading that cr*p someone had the nerve to call "Post Kenner _____." I don't understand how any serious basketball analyst is going to project what kind of year a team will have when they are spread out all over the place, for one thing. Secondly, this is KENNER, as many have pointed out. Do you think the prognosticator was just trying to get a rise out of Hoya faithfuls, or is he just a wet blanket? Thanks!

Just a word of many thanks to all who have posted game summaries, player evaluations and conclusions based on Kenner this year. For those of us unable personally to attend the games due to distance (or age), it helps keep us going until November. Especial thanks to vv83 for his FLHoya-like summaries and observations.

This write up makes it sound like this is Josh's Senior and last season. Spring 2014 (1 Semester) may be it for Josh.

Pretty sweet that Lubick also did an internship this summer - good to see that he's thinking about his future both with and without basketball. I wonder where he interned. Maybe coaching is in his future down the road?

Maybe coaching is in his future down the road? Surely, the new Fox Sports 1 anchors will become familiar with the fact that Lubick is a coach's son.
