There are a lot of wild names in the Internet rumor mill at Tennessee and none are likely, from Bob Knight to Nolan Richardson to Pat Summitt to Geno Auriemma.
The four candidates identified for interviews are Dana Altman (Creighton), Bruce Pearl (Wisc.-Milwaukee), Bobby Lutz (Charlotte), and Mike Anderson (UAB).

And this food for thought--according to the Tennessean nespaper, UT-Knoxville is willing to pay up to $1.5 million a year "for the right coach".
Georgetown's 11 men's sports head coaches make considerably less than that combined, and that's including John Thompson III.

What does Thompson make? Does Georgetown publish that info?

Does Georgetown publish that info? The only public reporting is on the university's tax return, and that's only for the offficers, directors, and five highest paid employees. The last time Esherick showed up on the 990 was for FY2002, when he made $249,055 plus about $20 grand in benefits (which made him only the fifth highest-paid non-officer). Esh didn't show up at all in FY2003, when the fifth-highest-paid guy (one Jeffrey Cossman) got $275,000--so he got less than that. FY2004 isn't available yet, probably won't be ready for a couple months. Once it is, by federal law you can ask to inspect a copy at the Treasurer's Office and they have to let you.

This link sheds more light on the considerable disadvatage Georgetown faces with other private schools, including Big East schools smaller than its own. Imagine if someone had contacted some of these folks during last year's search--how many would take a $300,000 or more pay cut to coach at Georgetown?? www.collegeathleticsclips.com/archives/000397.html

To be honest, I don't care too much about how much JT3 is paid. I think he is faithful enough to GU to stick around here for a long time, as I think other schools will be predisposed toward thinking that he is safe and entrenched, and I don't see the NBA knocking on his door unless he wins a national championship.
Ideally, all of our coaches would be paid more, but I don't see this as an incredible disadvantage as it regards men's basketball. If you look at our assistants, we hired 2 of the most respected assistants on a national level, and both have recently been recognized by a national publication. By all accounts, they have proven to be effective recruiters in spite of the shortened recruiting season for our program in the spring/summer of 2004. Syd Johnson is also a very respected member of the program and has received commendation from Hall of Fame coaches for what he brings in terms of basketball IQ to a program.
Also, giving Esh more money would not have solved our recent problems. It would have exacerbated them because we probably would not have been able to offset the higher salary with more revenue. From a moral standpoint, I'd also have trouble with it because one typically receives rewards and raises of this kind on the basis of achievement.

Interesting read DFW. I'm shocked that Vanderbilt pays their president, Gordon Gee (former President of Ohio State and Brown) almost $900k/year. I wonder if Jack's $600k salary is double that of JTIII's?

To run the numbers available for GU for the figures on that page... Salary Differential at the 15 Private Schools where basketball coaches were the highest paid employees (2003 figures) Craig Esherick (est.) $249,055 John J. DeGioia $558,330 Difference: 224% more for university president Basketball Coach’s Compensation as Portion of Total School Revenues FY2003: $690,012,078 / $249,055 = 0.036% Coach Compensation Payback School: 2003 basketball revenues (in millions) / % higher than coach’s salary [Note: I could only find 2002 revenue figures] $1,906,276 / 765.4% Just so everyone knows, GU's 990 is available at Guidestar.org for free, along with every other nonprofit's in the country. There's plenty of great tidbits in there, including this fact--in 2003, one John R. Thompson was paid $400,529 plus benefits for a position called "Presidential Consultant."

That last item is incredible, i.e. JT's compensation. Apparently it pays to have good attorneys working for you when you leave a job...
