Who saw this coming?
From ESPN:
Meanwhile, Memphis' Tarik Black was on campus Tuesday [at Oregon] and will leave Wednesday for visits to Georgetown, Kansas and Duke, according to a source with direct knowledge -- so the Ducks could add even more to the stable of one-year transfers. As one assistant coach who has recruited these type of players said, the one-year player at the end of his college career is in high demand because he can make more of an impact than an average freshman

Assuming Josh Smith is going to eligible for the second semester, I'm surprised that 1) we would go after him and 2) he would be interested.
He's a powerful player with physical presence, but he's pretty limited offensively, and he hasn't been a particularly outstanding rebounder or shotblocker. Not to say he couldn't help us or many other teams.

As long as he doesn't get blocked 2/3 of the time he goes up for a shot, he's an improvement over our "center" last year.

If he's only got one year of eligibility remaining and can play immediately, then there's nothing to lose since it won't impact 2014 recruiting. At the very least he'd provide another large body to help us get more physical, which we need.
Unless his arrival prevents us from getting another impact 2013 recruit, I say it's definitely worth the gamble.

I think he could help us. He was better last year than Mikael or Moses, certainly. But with Josh Smith coming in, there will be many other teams where he's a shoe-in starter at the 5. And he really can't play the 4 - he needs to be near the basket to do anything.

Seems an odd fit, with Josh eligible in mid-December, Moses contributing more, Hayes hopefully developing to give us something next season. Black would certainly help until Josh can play, but not sure what he gives us, or how many minutes he gets, sfter that.

Tarik Black'e problem was sensational freshman Nick King. I believe Black will be a benefit to the program that accepts him.

From my observation, Black may not have been what Memphis hoped for but he is still better than what we had last season. People are dreaming if they expect Josh Smith to play for long stretches at a time. Hopkins can move back to the 4 and Moses still can develop at the 5 if JT III can figure out how to incorporate a longer bench. The real loser would be Hayes. Whittington should be at the 2-3 if he has hope of playing at the next level. If Black is willing to risk not getting as much playing time as he might in Oregon or elsewhere, he would be a solid, low risk addition for the Hoays.

For whatever reason he's visiting, so some of you need to get on board with the idea that the staff wants him as part of the team next year.

So is the opinion of some on this board that Georgetown is too good to recruit a big man that Coach K and Bill Self are tripping over themselves trying to get?
Like most teams, we need all the help we can get in the frontcourt. I also hope and think Josh Smith will solve many problems, but let's not pretend there is not some serious risk in that assumption given his past. Black would be a legitimate high major frontcourt player, we did not have that last season.

Something to think about:
Greg Monroe is the only true center to average more than 30 minutes per game in the JT3 era. Josh Smith's high was 21 mpg his freshman year at UCLA. I doubt he's going to average more than Henry and Roy did their senior year (around 26-27 mpg). Someone will need to fill those extra 15-20 mpg. I wouldn't mind having another center besides Moses & Mikael to take those minutes

Would he fit in our offense?

Would he fit in our offense? At least as much as Moses does. I doubt he'd be featured like Sims, Greg or Roy were (or like Josh Smith might be). There's no way they'd run the offense through him.

You get better by playing against better players and practice is where you get to play the most, valuable depth will help everyone. Additionally, this year will be a committee at center and more bodies will help. We have 1 scholarship this upcoming year anyway and unless Copeland is coming in early I'll take any recruited player.

I see tarik as a four. Either way, he graduates this month, he can play immediately and is 6'8 and physical. He can finish at the rim; it's a win win in my opinion.
