Good news/Bad news - the local paper had an article this a.m. that John Cahill has been named the director of officiating for the new Big East. The good news - he won't be T'ing up any Hoyas any more. The bad news - he will be supervising the competency of the refs.

Yeah, but Cahill's the kind of self-aggrandizing D-bag that he will hold the refs to incredibly high standards because he doesn't think any of them are as good as he is.
So it might work out.

Bit of a generational change...Tim Higgins and Bob Donato retired before last season, Cahill's becoming the Director of Officiating, Ed Corbett is retiring in two years I believe.
The angst about one random game in Durham four years ago aside, it's a pretty legit pickup for the new conference.

Yeah Cahill actually has a pretty good rep, has worked the Final Four multiple times including this year.

You disappoint me Boz. I know the man personally, and he is *FAR* from what you describe. He is a humble man and he did have a fantastic career: respected by coaches, players, and colleagues alike.

I am happy that he is a nice man. Good for him.
But this sugarcoating of his professional career is pretty ridiculous.
Ask pretty much any fan - and not just Hoya fans - what their reaction has been over the last 10 or more years when they learn that John Cahill is the referee for their game.
I'm pretty sure the near-universal response is: "MotherF*****!!"
Probably second only to Ted Valentine.
But, as I said, this does not mean he cannot be a good director of officials.

So he is the head of officials for the NEW Big East? Are the administrative positions for the AAC continuing from the old Big East?
Also, congrats to Cahill. As much as he enjoyed the spotlight he was a competent official and I'm sure he will perform better on an off the court position. (Unless he pulls an Ed Rush Jr.)

Any thoughts on how this might affect the style of play in the new conference? Does choosing Cahill signal anything or not really?
