Unfair? They basically had the same numbers (ppg and RPG and apg wise) when he got ruled ineligible. Rock, if you are talking about absolute numbers, then perhaps Whittington will score as many points as Porter, but I am talking about efficiency, not the raw numbers. Porter's Offensive Ratings: 2012: 117.5 (on 17.4 usage), 2013: 118.8 (on 23.4 usage) Whittington's Offensive Ratings: 2012: 96.7 (on 14.8 usage) 2013: 98.8% (on 20.3 usage) The amazing thing about Otto Porter is that he increased his usage substantially, yet remained just as efficient as he did in his freshman year. Porter's Big East offensive rating was even better, at 122.6. Listen, I think Whittington is a key to this coming year, and I think there's a good chance he'll be our highest scorer, especially if he plays nearly 40 minutes a game, as he was before his ineligibility, but he can be even more effective with improved efficiency. By the start of next season, Whittington will have had almost 10 months to practice and improve without us seeing him, so I expect he'll get better, I just don't think Porter-like numbers should be the expectation, though it would be a really nice surprise. That said, Whittington will have Smith (hopefully) which should greatly open things up for Whittington, and could improve his efficiency substantially.

I want Greg to create some turnovers. We lost that aspect of our defense when he lost his eligibility. He's obviously not going to be playing much SG next year, but since I doubt he'll play much PF (unlike Otto), we're going to be going small a lot less next year and should have a much more effective zone (and press, hopefully) Also, some turnovers would help speed up our pace, since a big part of the reason we play slow is that we play a stifling half court defense that doesn't create turnovers, forcing the other team to use up much of the shot clock before they end their possession. My feeling is that Whittington will be playing a lot of Small Forward next year. Given what we know about JTIII, the most likely starters for next season will be something like Starks-Trawick-Whittington-Lubick-Hopkins/Moses (maybe Smith when he is eligible), and I think DSR would probably be the first off the bench. I am generally fine with this, but if Hopkins doesn't improve I'd prefer to see Moses or somebody else get most of the time at Center until Smith is available. My feeling is that the top three scorers will be Starks, DSR, and Whittington, with Smith possibly entering the mix, too. As a result, I expect DSR to get a lot of playing time, even if he's not technically a starter.

I was just happy to hear coach throw that tidbit out there that Whitt should be back. Whitt is a special player, much like Porter. I have said it now many times, the two of them have very similar games. Whitt is smooth and silky and plays outstanding defense. Porter will be missed, but we will be all right.

I think Greg is more of a talent than Otto. He just needs to match his intensity.

I think Greg is more of a talent than Otto. He just needs to match his intensity. More potential but not more of a talent. He needs to put a lot of things together, and learn how to shoot, before he could ever be better than Otto. The potential is there but I personally question if he will ever reach it.

of course we will be all right, now that we will be playing a high mid-major schedule I don't know about winning th league, Marquette is a 50/50 shot everytime we play and Brad Stevens of Butler with his post season success would be considered the best coach in the league.

Butler was a mid-major and the golden eagles are a top team, so we can play 26 cupcake games and 4 real games, maybe add NOVA

Greg doesn't need to be better than Otto, nor does he need to be "as good as" Otto. Greg just needs to focus on developing his own game, patting, passing and shooting.
Otto is on the (very) short list for best player of the JT3 era. Greg doesn't need to reach that level for our Hoyas to have a great 2012-14 season.
Getting our best defender back and adding a 6'9 shooter is already a big lift. If he's been working on his game and takes it to a new level... and we add a fit, motivated Josh Smith - the combination of those two, plus expected normal development for the rest of the team given another year of seasoning, GU should be able to compensate for the loss of Otto. If we are lucky enough to get a significant contribution from Cameron on top of that? Hey - we'll have another exciting season in the new Big East.
BTW, since we won the first BE season championship and the last of the "old BE", it would only be fitting to start the new BE with another Hoya regular season Championship!

For one, we'll be deeper. That's a plus and I think III has no choice but to lengthen his rotation. There's too much talent not to with the addition of Josh, Cameron and the return of GW. Throw in the natural progression of everyone that saw minutes this year; GU WILL be dangerous. Now, if we get any unexpected lift from Domingo and Hayes, then we're two deep at every spot. Quality deep. That said, just need GW to focus and want to be a beast, which potentially he can be. More talented than OP, but does he have the passion, drive and work ethic to be better than OP? Doesn't have to be better, but not a bad barometer to reach for. Kels will be the best pg in the BE; Josh could be best big. We've heard that he and GW have been by far the best on the white team. Kids that need to shoot all summer: Brilly, AB, Domingo, Nate. All for different reasons. Need Moses to be 100% healthy, if he is....whoa! Dude is strong as hell, but was limited last year. I actually believe he is better offensively than we've seen, but confidence in his knee was lacking last year. Can't blame him really. Imagine if he had a face up 12-15 footer in his arsenal. I believe Bolden will bounce.

And I actually see Bolden having a similar career to Aaron. His has yet to be finished yet so we'll see how both careers play out.

Has there been confirmation Greg is back? Yaboy posted this article in the recruiting thread.. www.csnwashington.com/ncaa/jtiii-fights-through-fgcu-pain-recruiting-trail"Replacing Porter's all-court production won't be simple or perhaps possible, but it will be easier if Greg Whittington and UCLA transfer Josh Smith are eligible. I asked about the frontcourt pair during the press conference and Thompson said he "anticipates" having both available next season.
Thompson passed on going into further detail in deference to it being Porter's big day. There also may simply be nothing else to add right now."It's not a full confirmation but it sounds good to me..

I assume there can't be and update of Greg's status either way until grades are sent out?

That's not a confirmation. It's very vague. In fact I would read into it that he isn't coming back. Because if he was, it would simply be a matter of saying Greg will be back. Anticipates means he expects him back; what does Greg say on the matter? Does he anticipate coming back?
Personally I think he would be making a mistake leaving. But don't be surprised if he leaves.
