On "Outside the Lines", Jalen Rose just attributed organized fouling as one of the reasons that the opponent who held Syracuse to 39 points did so.
Do we perform organized fouling?
Do we do it as pervasively as Cincinnati or Pittsburgh? I don't see us bump cutters nearly as aggressively as other programs.
What say you?

Jalen is just embarrassed that he picked SU last Saturday and ended up looking foolish. He also admitted intentionally playing dirty, so ...

Forgive my ignorance, but what is organized fouling?

Intending to bump/grab/hold cutters when the opposition is in its offensive sets. It is typically what is most disruptive to the Hoya's offensive offensive game of precise, hard cuts and timing of passes. Cincy, Nova, Pitt, Louiisiville defensive schemes ugly up the game.

We play in the Big East which is more physical than most conferences, but I can't believe we are in the top 1/3 in the conference with respect to this tactic.
Rutgers Nova Come to mind.

On "Outside the Lines", Jalen Rose just attributed organized fouling as one of the reasons that the opponent who held Syracuse to 39 points did so. I guess he did not mention the other reasons. Like... Syracuse played dumb, Syracuse showed no heart whatseover until the BET, Syracuse couldn't hit outside shots to save their lives, Georgetown out played them in every facet of the game. etc.?

Of course we do. It's called playing defense. Part of the game is bumping guys off their intended path. Why is this so controversial? It's the only way Rutgers ever competes with the Hoyas and I applaud them for doing so. Only Nova really takes this tactic to obscene levels where they dare officials to choose between a three-hour game or not whistling every foul.
If Jalen would like to watch the organized snuggling that happens west of the Mississippi, he better catch it this week because all those teams will be golfing next Monday.

Louisville is worse the Nova. Pitino even admitted to it this week. Also bumping guys off their intended paths is not defense it's fouling. You can try to get there before them and make them go around you, but that's generally not effective. As Jalen brags about every Saturday morning, he knows nothing about defense. There are many different types of difference. We play tougher on ball defense than off ball defense, unlike Rutgers/Pitt/Nova/Louisville who will deny cutters and passes all day and go for steals. We are also a pretty versatile defensive team that is good in zone and man, not usually the sign of an "organized foul" defense. Especially considering that we are not deep at all. He really has no clue what we he is talking about.

Every team in basketball does it to some extent. There are clearly teams that do it a lot more than we do, and I think we benefit, a lot, from games where it's called closely.

No coach encouraged organized fouling more than Big John Thompson. When you drove to the basket it was at your own risk. Hand checking was a must..... Love JTII

Our on the ball defense is why, for my money these Hoyas are the best defense in the country game in and game out. But of course you bump guys and occasionally get caught doing so. That's part of the game. It's my Big East bias I'm sure, but I find the Pac 10 unwatchable with its matador defense.

The Big East is definitely a more physical league than most and the allowance of defense is why I prefer it. I just think there is a fine line between physical defense and what some past Pitt teams, current Louisville, and past Nova teams have played. Basically just foul on every moment of ever possession and realize the refs can't call them all. That bothers me because it's not good defense, its usally pretty lazy defense, but usually gets credit for being good/solid.
