he's not fired, but Indiana sent him a letter saying basically they expected him to win more. Kind of an odd tactic, wonder if it would have worked on Esh

Nope. When a coach isn't working, he isn't working. Its why Esh would never be a winner, its why Amaker won't be a winner at Michigan, its why Gillen wasn't a winner at UVA, and its why Davis won't suddenly become great at IU.
Sometimes, when you get a long enough look, you just have to trust your eyes.
Tom Crean is on the verge, by the way.

What Indiana is doing to Mike Davis is a shame.
That man has done an excellent job following a legend - its not like in the 5 years before him, with Knight, they had great teams that had huge amounts of success.
I hope they fire him and he goes on to succeed somewhere else. Indiana doesn't deserve him

When you're in Indiana, you should be in the tournament every year. Struggling just to a winning record is particularly unacceptable.
Lowering the bar is the first step towards mediocrity. Indiana has just done it.

The best part about this is the idiot AD just basically signed the Indiana death wish for the next 4-5 years.
Name me a single recruit (other than overated local kids) that would seriously consider Indiana right now? Basically the AD said "Eh, we'll look at things year to year". Great support and it really makes recruiting easy.
Basically Davis is a lameduck with no credibility on the recruiting trail. Kids want some stabilty and they have no idea if Davis will be there from year to year.
You either fire the guy or give him an extension. You can't have an inbetween on these things. It's suicide for the program.
Heck, we gave Esherick an extension and MAYBE that is the reason we got Green to commit. Then you fire the guy if they don't perform, but you keep continuity.

It's always hard to follow a legend. Davis had a nice start, but he seems to have a hard time getting his players to put it out every game. Might need a change of scenery.

Anybody remember all the agony on this board over losing out on Patrick Ewing Jr.? Talk about a waste of breath.

Funny you mention that... there is a rumor on the other site that might pertain to this

Also, I think Davis needs to go somewhere he is wanted. Indiana does not like him. Plus, Mike Davis saying when he first took the job that his ultimate goal is to coach in the NBA didn't help matters. A large contigent still want Bob Knight there. They sell Texas Tech gear in the IU's bookstore and wear it to home games. What they should have done is just fired him now and get it over with. Why drag it out. The AD's statement says, if you read between the lines, you better improve,i.e., make it to the sweet sixteen or even elite 8 next year or your fired. With the team he has now, and the brutal out of conference schedule they play, I doubt the team will do that. Davis is a good recruiter who is still a young coach. They have talent and lost Josh smith as a recruit to the NBA, and they have a great recruiting class coming in. Its hard to win when you don't have the support of the community you coach for.

Anybody remember all the agony on this board over losing out on Patrick Ewing Jr.? Talk about a waste of breath. Actually, Patrick Ewing, Jr. is not a bad player at all. In fact, we could use him. He is raw fundamentally, but all the basic skills are there in terms of running the floor, rebounding, blocking shots, and tenacity.

Does anyone know if this year coming up is his last year on his contract? Just curious. Perhaps the AD is just being cheap and doesn't want to buy him out?
Just an odd situation. This lack of support will undermine him all year and kill the program...

The best thing for Indiania would be the earth opening up and swalowing Davis, hist staff, the AD and Myles Brand. They all need to go. The whole place needs a face lift.
The only thing that should stay are the striped warmup uni pants. Those rule. ;D
