RDF...what can be change at this point that will make a major difference? It's only a slump if you can break out of it... Major change can't take place until after the season and that has to do with changing philosophy on a few things which I discussed in other threads--but primarily, the offense, recruiting, etc....but inseason--he can play different people, make practice more competitive, and just push and play faster over in offense. It might not work--but playing more guys can keep morale up, it'll keep fresher legs for defense (face it--this team is going to have to grind it out to win, so don't act like they are a high powered offensive machine) and really think they need someone who doesn't play to emerge--be it Domingo or Bowen as scorers or Moses/Hayes as a guy who can give minutes (I like Moses here--Hayes is just not ready--and if III stated he needed him to be ready by December and he wasn't--he won't be ready to compete now).

Can I take a contrary opinion here? This team is 10-3, has played well out of conference, and lost by a bucket to Marquette.
The St. John's loss to a bunch of walkons was a historic loss. This was not.

I have been going to Hoya games since 1989 and thought as I walked out of Verizon last night that I had never seen such a demoralizing loss at home or away over the past 23 years. Turns out I was right.
I also went to Brooklyn for the UCLA game and can say that this looks like a different team on the floor. They are completely lost on offense. Tentative, reluctant to create and failing to see open players under the rim and on the wing. I am not sure if they have been coached up, down or sideways, but they sure are thinking too much and not playing the game as they are capable of playing it.
The seven man rotation needs to stop. Moses needs to start. He can rebound and eat up space even if he is out of position from time to time. I also agree they need to give the other guards a shot at minutes. Create a few set plays for wide open threes. Even DSR looks like he could be a decent catch and shoot guard. How about an alley-oop for Bowen or Trawick? They both know how to sky. Just a few basic designed plays could loosen up the team and defenses. We run them on in-bounds plays for easy buckets.
Last night it appeared that the frustration with the system set in. Markel was trying desperately to create. He would drive into traffic and the defense would collapse. Turnover and runout for an easy Pitt bucket. And what happened to the hand off shot behind the screen that Jason used to such success last year? Are Markel and DSR incapable of draining that same three?
It is surely gut check time for the team and coaching staff. We are done in the rankings and by next week and our opponents are going to keep using the same tactics to beat us - pack it in on defense, hold cutters, focus on Starks, Porter and Whit. Leave the rest open. And rebound, rebound, rebound. If they go inside, foul them early and often. They can't hit FTs on a consistent basis.
Our coaches are smart guys. They just need to realize that this year there is little to lose by opening things up to running more players in more set plays that they can actually execute. They need to understand that without Jason and Henry, they don't have the reliable shooting and passing that can open up opportunities for the rest of the team.
I only hope they settle back in on defense and make the needed adjustments on offense in time to right the ship. Watching more home games like that are going to make this a long, cold, miserable winter.

They pressured our three shooters and ignored everyone else. Hopkins first two shots were horrible misses and set the tone. This game reminded me of a couple of years ago when they would pass it around the perimeter aimlessly.
I truly believe Hopkins has talent but it is time to change it up. Just as soon have Domingo shooting from outside as DSR. Domingo is taller and quicker. Also would like to see Bowen enter and bring the energy level up. Don't care if he makes mistakes. There is at least a change of pace. Moses playing goes without saying. I disagree on the effectiveness of our defensive pressure. I though it was very effective last night --until the team gave up.

The only major starting lineup change they could do is start Moses or Jabril over Hopkins.
I was very pleasantly surprised by Hopkins's development in the first 6-7 games this season. Since then he has been nothing better than abominable.

Yeah, there were more than a few times where somebody was wide open under the rim in second half. #glasshalffull
