Watched both the semifinal (where he had a great game) and the final (where he missed a decent chunk of shots and was in foul trouble). Also just watched Wings completely choke away the game without getting the ball to Govan or even Buie until it was too late. Gotta love ty high school guards deciding they should be the man with two D-I players on their team.
Strengths: Soft shots / reasonably nice touch near the basket Height Gets up and down the court when he tries Has a decent hook Good passer and is already looking for it with his back to the basket Seems comfortable facing up even if it ended poorly most times Dunks Good free throws/jumper Smart rebounder, boxes out, tends to be around the ball Interview makes it sound like he knows he needs to work
Opportunities Though his sheer height played a decent role, he's not dominating defensively His offensive game is pretty "weak" -- he's not strong and he tends to move away from the basket on offense Not freakish athleticism
A more athletic, more fluid Henry Sims? Invoking Monroe seems strong. Greg was so much bigger and stronger from Day 1 and just ready to play. But he's obviously got more athleticism than Henry.

I agree that Sims is a pretty good comp; and they were both ranked around the same general area too. The biggest difference I can see is I don't remember Sims having the range on his jumper that Govan does.

one knock on Govan at collegiate level is that his offense is still pretty weak in comparison to Josh Smith. I will be happy if he averages 5 pts in our system next season...
and how tall is this kid exactly? i have seen someone mentioning he is 6'9, which is Hopkins' height, to 6'11, which is just an inch shorter than Josh.

He definitely is not like Josh in terms of physically dominating but he has alot of skill. His offense isn't weak at all. That's the best part of his game. I think he helps more than Josh because he can be used to space the floor like in a zone offense he can hit that foul line jumper. He has a very good back to the basket game. I don't know if it will all translate day 1 but I wouldn't be shocked if his development is not unlike Ike this year. His defense is the big problem. He isn't a rim protector at all really. I hope that will come.

He has much more size (bulk) than Henry Sims had at Georgetown (ever)- but not like Josh. He seemed at least as tall as Josh, and maybe an inch or so taller. I was impressed with his offensive moves and his range for a guy his size at his age, but realistically, for him to translate to the college game on both ends, his quickness will need to improve. But that is true for many, many bigs at his stage. Also, it is hard for me to evaluate his game when he was really a man among boys both with his team and against his competition in that tournament. At a minimum, I think he will make a significant contribution next year, and that Georgetown is a great choice for him to develop.
As an aside - several of his teammates in the final game - oh my at the end with a 7 to 9 point lead, with about 70 seconds left. Put aside the defense on the three pointers - how could they chuck up bad shots with 15-25 seconds left on the shot clock not once but several times!

Well, Josh is a senior, and Jessie has yet to matriculate, so I'm not sure that comparison is relevant. As well, though I don't claim to be an expert on predicting how a kid's game will translate to the college level, when I watched his AAU games last summer, I thought the strongest part of his play was his offense. He scored in a variety of ways, IIRC.

What do you mean by "his offense is pretty weak in comparison to Josh Smith"? Is that "his offensive game is actually pretty skilled for a high school player but obviously, Josh is really good at offense, so his offense is weak"? Or "He's not that physically strong so while Govan has offensive skills he does not have power in his offensive game, unlike Josh Smith." Or is it "His offensive game is poor compared to his high school compatriots." If it's the first two, that's correct. If it is the last one, no, that's not right at all.

Eric Bossi @ebosshoops 27m27 minutes ago Pretty impressive performance by Jessie Govan I just got done watching on DVR. Ideal five man for #Georgetown. Hands, touch, monster size.

For those who've seen Jessie play, who will he fit into our offense compared to Hop and Josh? Does he have the shot, mobility and passing ability to excel even as a frosh?

Even watching those hi lights I feel we are gonna be doing a lot of complaining about Jessie not getting calls like Josh.
