nathanhm: Right! When we think or talk about sports issues it's just about entertainment. I trust God to comfort all of those involved.

My heart is filled with sorrow for the victims and their families of this tragedy. The country needs to act now to stop these increasingly frequent attacks of innocent kids at schools. I can only hope today's events provoke real change instead of the usual do-nothing response.

Things like this really do put everything else in perspective. Today was one of those days---as a teacher who works with kids the same age as those involved in this horrific tragedy and a parent of a 7 yr old, it's been a rough one. I echo the sentiments of GUMBA above......let this be a catalyst for some change. Let it inspire our leaders to put aside differences and focus on what matters.....the people of our country.....and start doing something for them instead of taking care of their own selfish interests.

I live 25 minutes from Newtown. Very sad around here. My companys plant manger's daughter is a teacher there. She called him on her cell from the class room as bullets were being fired. She had the kids in the closet hiding from the gun man. Certainly puts things in perspective.

Richfame we will find out alot of heroes in that school . Lots of teachers doing their job caring about kids. Some didn't make it. Some did great things i am sure. We trust our kids to teachers for most of the day and most of them ARE heroes. God be with all of Newtown.

Absolutely devastating news, especially so close to home.

I would like to add my condolences. As a father of a son (grown now), I cannot imagine anything worse than losing a small child. My heart goes out to those, who lost a child, but also to the families of the teachers, who died. Yes, and these tragedies are happening all too often, and I hope the powers that be put aside their differences and work on this problem.

As a father of two young children, including one in kindergarten, I cannot fathom the sadness and grief the poor families in this community must be feeling. I have no physical connection to Newtown but this tragedy has shaken my wife and I to our core. There is no shortage of heroes as so many teachers and educators put their lives at risk for their students. I join in with all those that hope we will see positive changes made in the wake of this tragedy.

People will never forget this. My wife is a Elementary teacher so this hits close to home...

Tomorrow morning I will put my 5 year old on a bus to attend a school less than 15 miles from Sandy Hook. She will meet the new school security guards and get lessons in safety that no child should have to contemplate. No right is more important than her right to be safe at school, none. As of now she has no idea of what really happened but over the next few days she will hear kids talking about "Newtown," about someone they may have known or maybe even about "kids who died." There is nothing I can do to prepare her for this and nothing I can do to prevent it - we have had all the discussion we feel is appropriate but I can now name the hour and day that she will learn horrible things about the world.
And I am lucky, because just 15 miles east...
Do you think she knows I have been crying for three days every time she isn't in the room?

We have a six month old daughter, and neither my wife nor I can even make it through even the intro to any article without just getting overwhelmed. I am without words. I cannot imagine.

My eldest daughter is a kindergarten teacher in the Boston area. Friday was difficult though she did not hear much of the news until the end of the day. Today is an extremely difficult day for her... and for us.

Someone reported a suspicious person near town this AM with an unidentified object over his shoulder - our schools and the towns around us (incl probably Newtown, though I don't know how open their schools even are today) are in lock down all morning. Probably nothing but enough to give 1000 parents palpitations and force the evacuation of one school. If the US Supreme Court in Lopez said that guns in schools have no impact on interstate commerce, they had clearly not spoken to the managers who notice that all parents are operating at about 5% productivity today. Lic is right - this is a time for action. Cambridge, good luck my friend and welcome to parenthood, where every little flutter in the force is magnified exponentially. God bless.

I have read this board just about every day for the past ten years or so, but have never posted anything. I graduated GU in '94. My wife is a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary and my daughter is a 4th grade student. Both were unharmed on Friday, but I cannot begin to describe what Friday or the aftermath has been like. It has been very comforting though and inspiring to see the outpouring of support which our town has received. I am not surprised to find that that support extends to this forum. Thank you for all the concern which you all have expressed.
