This is a much bigger blow to the Big East than ND leaving. I was not a fan but he was a talented coach.

The timing of this is miserable. UConn doesn't have time to conduct a full national search - many would-be candidates are not going to even consider leaving their school in September.
Calhoun essentially is forcing UConn to hire "his" guy, Kevin Ollie. This is similar to what Dean Smith did when he retired in October of 97. UNC hired his hand-picked successor, Bill Guthridge. That UNC team was loaded and it worked out for the Heels.
However, there's no indication that Ollie is Guthridge. Much more frequently, hand-picked guys don't have the success of their mentor. On top of that, the cupboard isn't exactly stocked for UConn, as some talent (Oriakhi for example) left before the sanctions hit.
UConn is essential for survival of the Big East, but unfortunately they do not look like they are ready to be successful going forward. As much as I despise the guy, Calhoun is the reason for much of their success, and I do not think just anyone can replicate that in Storrs. They have little success in their history books before Calhoun and it's easy to imagine a similar dearth of success post Calhoun. The implications for the Big East losing one of its most nationally recognizable names - and not to the ACC or another conference this time - could be catastrophic. Our basketball prescence has been severely impacted unless UConn is lucky with Ollie.

Do you know who Kevin Ollie is? The guy is a 13 year NBA veteran. He was never a great player, but he was a solid back up and a great character guy that everyone wants on their team. He was coached by Calhoun in college and he had a few years to be his assistant. Ollie knows a lot about the game of basketball, both collegiately and professionally, and he has learned a lot from calhoun. I'm not saying that he will be calhoun, but to say that they have to get "lucky" with Ollie is a little absurd. They have no reason not to have faith in him.

This is even less of a surprise than ND moving to the ACC (which wasn't much of a surprise itself). Calhoun was ready to stop when they couldn't beat the APR probation and his talent bailed - the broken hip was icing on the cake. The timing was obvious too: to leave the school with little option but Ollie. www.espn.go.com/ncb/story?storyId=8371331

Even the Rat couldn't stand the smell of his stank probation cheese. The world of CBB and the big east is a much better place without this crook. Ollie is a standup guy with solid character. Just too bad he has to get off to a start with his hands tied because of the filth that Calgoon left behind.

I'm not saying that he will be calhoun, but to say that they have to get "lucky" with Ollie is a little absurd. They have no reason not to have faith in him. His resume as a coach is two years on the bench at UConn. That's it, that's the list. Sure, we can speculate that he learned the things from Calhoun that will help him win games. We can guess that his NBA experience will appeal to prospective student-athletes. We can hope he succeeds as head coach of the Connecticut basketball team. But the facts are that he's won zero games. He's won zero tournament games. He's won zero championships. Connecticut, for better or for worse, is rolling the dice here. Hell, even guys who have won in some places don't see that success translate to their new school (Billy Gillispie for example), and here's a guy with no track record at a school with good seasons under one coach and not much else. Does that mean he can't be a good coach? No. It means he hasn't proven himself to be one. And with just two years on the bench, chances are he's not ready to head a major college program, but that's just my opinion. There's nothing to indicate UConn can overcome

Kevin Ollie may be a fine coach but he will face the uphill climb that Gordy Chiesa, Hoddy Mahon, Craig Esherick, Kevin Mahoney, and others have faced: the assistant coach that becomes a first time head coach in a major conference. The UConn Horde may not give him the patience and deference that it gave Calhoun all these years.
By the way, the same danger awaits Mike Hopkins.

Really I have to agree with the detractors on this thread. Calhoun was not a credit to the Big East. His program is the antithesis of Gtown. His violations speak for themselves. Hopefully playing by the rules will be rewarded in the long run.

That makes me almost old as dirt, as I saw him play on Holy Cross with Jack "The Shot" Foley one St. Paddy's day vs Colorado State U.

The Shot is not that old even i saw him play back in the old Roberts Center. A contemporary of Pops at Providence in the early 60s.
But back to the verbally challenged Calhoun. Seaweeds Times article says it all "a man who started out with principles and sold them for glory."
I still can't get the picture of Thompson sending El Amin Back to the Airport after he asked for money while on his recruiting visit.

UConn, I believe will/should look outside the box and consider young attractive coaches. Shaka Smart should get the first call. Also, Cooley (Providence), Grant (Alabama), and Harvard coach.

too many issues with Cooley at Providence already. Is Uconn really a better Job today than what Shaka turned down at Illinois is Alabama in the same category. This is not the Big East of 2010 anymore.
