I think this is a terrible idea. If he gets the job, it's obvious that it's only because he's Jordan's friend (since he's completely unqualified for an NBA HC position) and if he doesn't get the job, it'll hurt him everywhere else, because c'mon, even his buddy Jordan won't entrust the fate of one of the worst-run teams in the League to him.

Uh, why is he completely unqualified for an NBA HC position?
The main issue here is that this franchise is AWFUL and I'm not sure anyone should want this job.

PE Sr is a former NBA player and has been a NBA assistant coach in Orlando for 5 years. That's more qualifications than this guy and as much qualification as at least a half dozen other current NBA coaches.

If they get Anthony Davis things will be very different. Could be a perfect position for Big Pat. School the young center, follow the "Kevin Durant" model.
And Pat is definitely qualified. NBA HOF, 5 years of NBA coaching experience.

This team is terrible - but it can't possibly get any worse, right? And the odds are in its favor to get Davis, whom Patrick could mentor into a dominant big man. Maybe Patrick could knock some sense into MJ's head and help him make the tough decisions needed to turn this franchise around. Certainly a risk, but sometimes you have to take those risks tobreak into the head coaching ranks. On balance I say go for it.

Bobcats need a young energetic coach that knows the game...He can relate to the younger players... Patrick is 50, so he's not exactly a young coach. What a hire would do is get his foot in the door for future jobs, because it's always easier to hire an ex-NBA coach than one that never had the job before.

I was hearing yesterday Jordan wanted Jerry Sloan. Dont know if there was interest on the other side. I think Ewing is qualified to interview for a head coaching position, who knows if he would be successful or not. I do think though that Ewing would serve better in a role as an assistant coaching young big men. But who knows. Seems like hiring an NBA coach is kind of a crap shoot unless you get a guy like Phil Jackson.

Phil Jackson was a crapshoot when the Bulls hired him. He had been an assistant, and a coach in the CBA. Pat Riley was a big crapshoot when the Lakers hired him - out of the announcer's booth. I wouldn't expect Pat to turn out like Riley or Jackson, but I'd love to see him get a coaching opportunity, particularly if he can get Davis along for the ride.

I don't believe RosslynHoya is stating that Patrick is not qualified. Rather, I'm guessing he is stating that would be the perception that the only reason he got the job was because his buddy felt sorry for him. Patrick is qualifed to coach........ or anything else in my book.

I have to wonder if PE would be perfect for the job with MJ. PE is enough of a friend to MJ that he would not get shut out but enough of a competitor that if MJ had a bad idea PE would likely say his piece. Not too many head coaches are in the position PE is where he is doing the hard work of coaching because he loves the competition and the game. He's the GU exception to the deflated Basketball much like the Thompsons.

Sorry, LeRoy. While it's noble of you to attempt to defend the indefensible, rosslyn's exact words are "since he's completely unqualified for an NBA HC position". Unfortunately, for him such nonsense is par for the course.

I love pat but I personally don't know how qualified he is because I don't know the extent of his capacity with the Magic. If he is just a positional coach and only deals with Dwight and doesn't do anything else for the team, then yeah I can see the opinion that he's not qualified to be a head coach. But maybe he has more responsibility than that. Is he a part of the strategy sessions? I honestly don't know but I don't think anyone else here does either.
Anyway there have been head coaches hired who are a lot less qualified than Pat, so even if his experience is limited that should not hold him back.

“It’s been mystifying to me that assistants that don’t have near the experience that Patrick has have been getting jobs,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said Wednesday. “He’s ready. And I hope this offseason will be his time.”

Is he part of the strategy sessions? What? He's a full assistant coach, not a water boy!

We won't know until he's given a chance; heck, the Wizards should take a look although i personally would keep the current coach for a couple years at least.

Michael Jordan is one of the worst w Evalators in the history of the game.
From thinking Kenny Williams was going to be the next Shawn Kemp while he was still playing for the Bulls to drafting Kwame Brown #1 to all the Bobcats draft picks he cannot pick talent.
Pat would be better off going anywhere else because the Bobcat talent or lack of is going to pull Ewings first Head coaching job into the abyss.
