Hi Guys!
Last year we had two stars coming into the season, Chris Wright and Austin Freeman, who was the preseason Big East player of the year. During the first half, they were both great. Then during the last few weeks of the season something happened. Both of them seemed to go down hill. Yes I know that Chris was hurt, but he was never the same. Neither was Austin.
Coming into this year, Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark were our stars and until recently they were both terrific. However, lately something has happened, especially for Jason. It isn't that they aren't trying, and they are both of them are visibly frustrated. Maybe they are trying too hard. We need both of them playing at a high level to make noise in the NCAAs.
BTW, if Jason has a normal game yesterday, we beat Cincinnati
What do you guys think??
Jerry

I think we are looking too hard to find trends. They just had a bad game. We played quite well against ND and Pitt, and not good enough against Marquette and Cinci. We are at the part of the season where games are against good teams playing for a lot, so things tighten up. Its the same in every sport down the stretch. I would agree that this is when they need to step up, and I am disappointed that is not happening enough. But, as I said yesterday, do people think Marquette is all of sudden a a team in crisis because they got their butts kicked by Cinci and Lville in the last 10 days?

I think we are looking too hard to find trends. Good point, Jook. The counter is Henry. He's playing way better than at any point in his career.

Agree with PR and throw in fact that Julian was gassed at end of last year and really struggled. Team is healthier too. When you have a player who is trying to comeback after sitting for weeks and his 1st game will be NCAA's-that's a lot to ask.

Bottom-line is that even though we should have won that game, cinci causes problems for us. As for Jason and Hollis....neither had the same degree of expectations that Chris or Austin had placed on them. Further, over the course of the year, Jason has been fairly consistent. I think he bounces back in the dance. Hollis on the other hand has been rather unremarkable most of the season. He's had a couple of nice stretches, but he hasn't been the leader on the floor some of us thought we might turn into. Both Austin and chris certainly were that for long stretches last year.
Finally, Henry has arguably emerged as our best player at the end of the season....again, nothing like what happened to Julian his last several games. Despite the outcome, different team, different circumstances.

I'll feel much better when Jason again plays as he did four games ago against ND.

I'll feel much better when Jason again plays as he did four games ago against ND. We all will. If Jason plays like that, and Otto and regularman continue playing like they've been playing, the Hoyas will be just fine.

The disturbing similarity right now is in how the two Cincinnati games were lost. In each, we were coming off of a short turnaround. In each, we didn't capitalize on first half opportunities to create distance. In each, we got sloppy at the end (not surprisingly, earlier in this game with the even shorter turnaround), missing free throws, making turnovers, losing sharp motion on O and losing power on D, and a physical team took advantage to beat us. The most disturbing thing? The opponent's approach to us was predictable -- having played them once already, it should have been even more predictable; yet, III did not seem to have a plan specific to the situation.
Sad, really, after beating Pitt in a way that seemed to have corrected the glaring mistakes that caused our earlier loss to them. SMH.

Another similarity is to the Marquette game. Lots of pressure on the guards really hurts our offense.

OK, this is where I interject and say perhaps Cincy is just better than us when playing head to head? I am sure there are teams we thrive against that Cincy struggles with and vice versa. They are a good team. Most people are saying what a classic game we played and even though we lost, the team looked good overall. As fans, we are over-critical and look for the negative. The reality is we played a very good team, the 4-seed after all, and it took 2OTs to decide the outcome. We showed resilience, and know if we could have done a simple thing like make free throws the game was over.
So let's take a deep breath. This team bears no resemblance to our last few teams. Sure, we may "only" live up to our seed in the NCAAs, but that will be an improvement. I think we all hoped the ceiling was unlimited for this team because they are so young, but we have flaws we cannot help but just try to minimize. The important thing is our defense will keep us in every game and in the tournament that is really important because so many games come down to one play like yesterday's game.

I may be off base, but I think Jason was affected by the accolades he received prior to the BE tourney. I honestly do not think he expected to be First Team all league or the sportsmanship award-he seems a humble guy- and the expectations to perform at that level may have hurt him. Now that the BE is all over and SU and MU have fallen along with us, I think Jason will be fine.

This team is nothing like last years team. AFree struggled at the end of last yeat because he didn't have a PG to run the offense. Austin was simply asked to do to much for the O and he was gassed.

Defense and rebounding are not similar.

We lost because we didn't hit our free throws that's all. We played very well besides that. don't read too much into it.

What's disturbing is that we always seem to draw the hottest team. UConn/VCU last year. Cinci/? this year
