Can anybody post from the Bilas story on ESPN.com? es.pn/zHimFaIn November, ESPN broadcasters Bill Raftery, Sean McDonough and I were sitting courtside at the Lahaina Civic Center waiting for Georgetown to begin its first practice in Hawaii for the Maui Invitational. The Hoyas were young, not much was expected of this group, and the only real publicity the team had was (through no fault of their own) for a fight in China over the summer. Coach John Thompson III walked over to us and said, "We're going to be good. I don't know when, but we are going to be good." And, it turns out, JTIII undersold his team's prospects. ;D

espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnationNeither team can win the Big East, or even grab a share of it. Neither team is in any danger of missing the NCAA tournament. Neither team is facing some existential crisis, or some recent spate of deficiency, from which it needs to emerge.
So what, exactly, is on the line Monday night? Come to think of it, not all that much. Whatever happens, Georgetown will finish about where it is currently slotted to finish in the Big East. Notre Dame's run of nine Big East wins came to an end, 61-58, at St. John's on Saturday; the powers of ND's magical hot tub finally ran their course, as all great hot tub superstitions must.

GU Hoyas Quoteswww.guhoyas.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/022712aai.htmlGeorgetown Head Coach John Thompson III
On Georgetown's smothering defensive effort...
I thought our defense was very good today. You play a team like that where they have so many good shooters, to go through a game and only allow them to take 17 threes is a big deal. Forget the fact they only made three, but the fact that they only took 17...something they are good at doing, something they try to do...I thought our guys were pretty attentive, our close-outs were good. We did a good job of protecting the three point line, but not staying spread out, so with penetration they had clear passes.
On what went into the defensive effort...
The guys worked, I thought Jason (Clark) set the tone from the beginning and was consistent throughout the game. I thought Henry (Sims) did a good job defending Cooley, because he makes you work. It's hard to guard him, Henry is going to sleep well tonight, because he makes you work.

ESPN.com's College Basketball Nation Blog: Simply put, the Hoyas -- who share a league with the 29-1 Syracuse Orange, by the way -- play the best brand of defense in the Big East. Throughout their now 12-5 campaign, they've allowed league opponents the fewest number of points per possession. On Monday, it was easy to see examples as to why: The Hoyas use their all-around length to challenge every shot, both from long range and inside the arc, with tenacity, and when their opponents miss -- and they do so more often against Georgetown than all but five teams in the country this season -- the Hoyas often secure the rebound. On Monday night, Georgetown held Notre Dame, a previously scorching squad, to just 17.6 percent on 3 of 17 shooting from long range. Forward Jack Cooley was a non-factor, saddled with foul trouble and unable to compete with the interior length of Henry Sims, and ND rarely got second chances on its misses. The result was .77 points per trip, by far the Irish's worst output of the past two months. espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation

collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/28/credit-the-hoyas-defense-for-the-notre-dame-win/More than anything, what I took out of Notre Dame’s trip to the Verizon Center was just how good Georgetown is capable of being defensively. I’ve talked all season long about how effective this team can be in a zone with the length and athleticism that John Thompson III is able to put on the court at the same time. Against the Irish, the Hoyas showed what they are capable of doing in man-to-man situations as well.

"John Thompson III Schools Mike Brey" - Grantland's The Triangle Blog: www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/18436/john-thompson-iii-schools-mike-brey"In January, I said the Hoyas were the toughest team in the country. Coming off the well-publicized brawl in China, they were unranked and unconsidered to start the season. Upperclassmen like Jason Clark and Henry Sims gave them experience, but nobody believed that the experience was accompanied by talent. A close loss to Kansas, followed by wins over Memphis and Alabama, began to change minds, but it wasn't until John Thompson III's team pulled out a gutty road win at Louisville and beat Marquette a week later that people started to realize the quality of this year's Hoyas. Georgetown now has a 12-5 Big East record and a no. 12 national ranking in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. It nearly took down Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, losing in overtime, and on Monday night the Hoyas moved to third place in the conference with an emphatic 59-41 home win over red-hot Notre Dame. The Hoyas didn't magically gain natural ability or athleticism, and they're still not among the elite teams in the country. Instead, this is a testament to resilience and discipline. There are other strong candidates, but for me, Thompson is the coach of the year."

As you can see, a black bear made its way onto the court during this play, but fell asleep because the basketball was too boring." ;D

Hoya Prospectus - Georgetown 59, Notre Dame 41Thinking rationally about Georgetown Hoyas basketball so you don't have toEXCERPT:Is [Notre Dame's poor shooting due to] fatigue? - Sean McDonough I think they're tired of looking at long armed athletes right on top of them. - Jay Bilas
The Hoyas put together one of their best all-around games of the season tonight, absolutely shutting down the Fighting Irish while putting together one of their better offensive performances. (Fifty nine points in 53 possessions against a decent defense is a strong offensive game for this team.)
On defense, the Hoyas gave Notre Dame very few good shots. Jack Cooley, who until Saturday had been the scourge of the Big East, was completely shut down on the interior. Jerian Grant, who has been excellent as a playmaking wing, was forced into tough shot after tough shot. The Hoyas even managed to force a few more turnovers than normal and owned the defensive boards...
Seniors Henry Sims and Jason Clark had nice offensive and defensive games in their last home games as Hoyas.
Henry has been a wonderful story for the Hoyas, replacing Ya-Ya Dia in my mind as "that player that suddenly got pretty good as a senior." Yes, Henry had some non-conference success last year, but this year he's had some big games against some top notch opposition.
In this game, Henry avoided the turnovers that have plagued him at times and made a decent percentage of his shots. When he does that, he's an incredibly valuable part of the offense. Even when he doesn't though, it's fun to watch him play defense. He may not have Roy Hibbert's size, but he's quicker guarding players on the perimeter and despite his lack of heft, hasn't been pushed around inside at all.
It's also important to keep in mind that Henry is as young or younger as some sophomore centers in this league (Louisville's Dieng and Syracuse's Melo). I hope some NBA teams realize this and, at minimum, stash Henry in the NBDL for some seasoning.
Clark was his usual dynamo self -- scoring when needed, handling the ball, and generally being a perimeter pest. He was always positioned as the third wheel in the "DC3," but his senior season may be the most complete season any of those three players had. If he leads the Hoyas to tourney success, I suspect most of the fanbase will remember it that way.
Either way, Jason Clark has been a great Hoya for four years and it's been a pleasure to watch him play.
