I enjoy a good ref basing basically every game. And, I enjoy a good coach and player bashing basically every game. Occasionally a player will break the "wall" and acknowledge a taunt or a comment, but not much more than that. And I have never seen a ref acknowledge a fan, except for Joe Lonardo who sits dead center front row behind he scorer's table and appears to know every ref's name, family history, and blown calls going back to a time when Cahill was just a newbie (I am jealous). Other than that, I've never seen a ref go beyond the "wall."
That being said, I saw something tonight that I have never seen before. Shabazz Napier (I think it was him) was driving into the lane as the shot clock wound down and Clark (I think it was him) was guarding him closely. The refs called a pretty poor bailout foul for Napier on Clark and the crowd was not happy. Lichoya (rightfully) unleashes on Ed Corbett.
Except Corbett doesn't ignore him. Corbett actually takes his middle and pointer fingers and puts them on his other wrist as if to check his pulse and takes exaggerated deep breaths while staring at Lichoya. "Calm down" it seemed he was saying, "it's not something to get worked up about." Not only was he acknowledging a fan, he was actively taunting one! And he did it for an entire timeout!
Now, I didn't know how to react as it went on for an entire timeout! But I eventually decided to give Corbett a standing O for being a good sport about it and returning fire. But it got me to thinking afterward, was Corbett's action appropriate?
Also, way to go Lichoya! Give 'em hell!

yup he did.... it reminds me of the time au game gordon austin over the break MAYBE the game during our championship season can't really remember but one of the reasons big john did NOT want to play local teams ESPECIALLY over the break. yup anyway au was beating us.. gordon austin kept carrying the ball ps this was WAY BEFORE allen iverson.. anyway Hank Nichols the DEAN of the referees and a professor at nova i believe comes over to me at the time out.. he throws me an extra whistle and says "here you wanna try?" i laughed.. and said " funny i have no come back to that one". not sure of the details but pretty accurate i think go hoyas.. ps at least twice that guy went against our guy and elbowed him to clear him out THATs why our guys hand landed on him TWICE imo but whata i know WHAT A NICE RETURN TO D HOYAS nice game ps AU did win that game !

Corbett had rabbit ears tonight - he got into it with 2 guys in the front row across the court from the Hoya bench later in the game. His crew was uniformly awful tonight.

Maybe now we know where Greg Monroe's phantom T came from.

Easy way to make it stop, Corbett. Stop reaming the home team.

Who do you think wins among the 30 or so Big East refs in a vicious knife fight? Or an over-the-top-rope Battle Royal?
I don't see anyone besting Gene Steratore, although I have a sneaking suspicion Tim Higgins has serious old man strength and probably fights dirty.

Kick ball with 6:13 left in first half and subsequent walk on Sims basket were atrocious.

I saw this same back and forth with Ed Corbett -- loved it.

This was great to watch. I thought Corbett was a good sport about it. He sure seemed to be enjoying it. Nice work lic, and nice work by the duo in 121 calling for the forearm pushoff!
Way too many calls last night, though.
And WOW, binx; the resemblance between Burr and Dennehy is uncanny (except that Burr looks a little meaner ... as to be expected).

Hoyabinx, I actually see a ref/fan interaction just about every game - During the Rutgers game a rather animated gentleman in my section (110, across hoya bench) yelled at the ref that he missed a charge and the ref turn to him and literally said "yeah, maybe I missed it"... oddly enough it shut everyone up in the section for a minute... Another one earlier in the season was a "you finally made a call" and the ref turned and dead panned: "probably my last one". So I think it happens often and it actually has a calming effect more than an antagonizing one. Now, a rather inibriated friend of mine once called a ref "Donaghy" after a series of questionable calls... that went over like a fart in church, and the ref literally pointed at him ad said "one more and you are gone"...

Uh, i think I was that "rather animated gentleman." It was an obvious goal tend and blown call, and his response did shut me up. I think i might have muttered something like, "OK, well, you owe us one."
