TarikElBashir #Hoyas F Moses Ayegba (ACL surgery) is on the floor for practice at Allstate Arena. He's been cleared for controlled, non-contact drills.
Thought this deserved its own thread. We can't forget about big Moses. Hopefully the recovery continues going well so that he's ready to protect the basket next season.

Wow can never have too much depth. Would be great to get him back for February, March, and April

Don't we just want to take the redshirt, given that he isn't likely to get much run anyway? I see him as being more valuable as a practice opponent for Henry, Mikael and maybe Tyler and then a contributor for the next three seasons.

I'll leave it up to the coaching staff. If the staff thinks he can make a difference in the last two months of the season then absolutely. If he's not going to make a difference this year then i suspect they'll red shirt him. But no one really knows how much of a contributor he can be this season.

Great news for next year and beyond.
I would be stunned if he didn't take his redshirt this year. big difference between controlled - non-contact drills than giving things a full go. Would take a while to just get in basketball after being cleared to play in full practices.

Only in rare instances can a player get a second redshirt year. I do not think he redshirted last year, but maybe my memory is off. My daughter plays basketball at her college and she tore her ACL in September and was told it would be 6-8 months from surgery before she could play again. I cannot remember when Moses had surgery, but it seems that this would give him at most a handful of games if he came back this season.

Glad to see his recovery is going well. I have no interest in him trying to extend himself and play this season. We have Henry and Hopkins, that is good enough. He will definitely get a medical red-shirt from the NCAA this season so he will have 3 full seasons to play after this one.
Also, it is mid-January, if he is just getting back on the court now, he would not be ready to meaningfully contribute this season. It is not like we lack depth or have frequent foul issues.

Moses played against App State in December and UConn and Cinci in March. No way he redshirted.

Great news for next year and beyond. I would be stunned if he didn't take his redshirt this year. big difference between controlled - non-contact drills than giving things a full go. Would take a while to just get in basketball after being cleared to play in full practices. This. Presumably he's in this "drills but no contact" stage for a while, and then if that works alright he's cleared to go back to full practice. Maybe there's even an intermediate stage there, where he's cleared to do some light contact but not certain activities. After that, he'd have to get back into shape after not being fully mobile for months, and after that he'd have to actually adjust to BE-level play, something he's never been exposed to before (he's essentially a freshman as experience goes). Just seems like way too many hurdles to overcome between now and the end of the season to actually expect he'd make a measurable contribution. Barring something completely unforeseen I think keeping the red shirt on him is the way to go. It's still great news though, because it means he gets the next few months to build his skills with Othella. Hopefully that plus a summer of hard work and a good camp next fall means he'll be ready to make an impact at the very beginning of next season. We certainly need at least one of the freshman/sophomore bigs to step up, and Moses' ceiling is as high as any if he can develop a skill package to go along with his size and athleticism.

There is approximately zero chance that he plays this year. As RB noted, he's likely terribly out of basketball shape (since his cardio would have been severely cut by his injury), and there is a huge difference between controlled drills and a game. What is great about this though is it means he'll likely have a full offseason. It may end up being good for him in the long run (provided he's physically 100%) because he'll get some extra time to learn the system and be ready to play.
He didn't redshirt last year. Aaron did.

He won't play this year. If he just got put into the non-contact practice stage, he's probably got another month if not more of it to go. After that would be light contact and harder running. Still a lot of time away from being serviceable in a game.

Definition: A medical redshirt is a student who misses an entire year of competition due to injury and is granted an extension of his or her athletic eligibility to replace the lost season. In men's college basketball, a student who participates in less than 30 percent of his team's games may apply for medical redshirt status
Moses qualified for a red shirt last year or this year, take your pick, he has only three years of eligibility after this year. So if he is ready, let him play, if he's not then keeps him in street clothes..
It is very rae to grant the sixth year.

Good to see that he is approved for non-contact work, but I don't want to see him coming back too soon. The ACL is a tough injury.

He missed nine games last year due to a (ridiculous) NCAA suspension. Then he was used sparingly from that point forward. I don't remember there being an injury issue. If there wasn't an injury, I don't think the 30% rule applies, does it?

He still has only 5 years of eliginility, period. It usually takes some congressional pressure to get the sixth. He doesn't have a congressman to represent him.
Nikita had the same issue. Did you ntoice he transgerred in January and became eligible in January?. The five year rule applies to transfers also.

Moses did not red shirt last year. He played last year, therefore he cannot have taken a voluntary red shirt. He did not suffer a season ending injury either, therefore he cannot have taken a medical red shirt (and those have to be approved by the NCAA, so we would have heard about it).
He is still eligible for a medical red shirt this year if he sits out the rest of the year. If he chooses to take that, he will have 3 years of eligibility left. If he plays this year, he only has two years of eligibility left because he did not red shirt last year.

He won't be back. But it is still good to hear his recovery is on track, if not early.
