Let's also not lose sight of the fact that ESPN is now a mainstream network, not the true sports fan's network as which they were started. Simply put, they have become what they were founded to combat.

Versus/NBC Sports currently devotes a lot of time to hunting/fishing shows. Obviously people watch those, otherwise they wouldn't exist. But if they added Big East basketball to their NHL lineup (instead of those hunting/fishing shows), they would immediately become my favorite channel. I don't know how many people other than Boz and me that applies to, but it's something, right?

NBC Sports is trying to become a major player. I'd be a proponent of a Big East partnership. ESPN needs competition badly. Their monopoly on sports coverage is slowly killing them. I've been becoming more and more dissatisfied with the worldwide leader each year. They can just do pretty much whatever they want with little to no repercussions.

Never assume malice when incompetence is an equally valid explanation
Also, let's get on NBC. Maybe they'll bring back the NBA on NBC music for Big East games

Never assume malice when incompetence is an equally valid explanation This. It's also why most government conspiracy theorists are wrong. But that's for the B&G board ... EPSN plays what sells. And let's face it, there are a lot of dumb people out there who buy drivel.

I don't know how many people other than Boz and me that applies to, but it's something, right? The only way they stay viable is by showing a diverse pool of live events. The NHL is good and college football even better but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they bid hard for the Big East contract.

Also, let's get on NBC. Maybe they'll bring back the NBA on NBC music for Big East games This. Number one reason. Also, I seem to remember going straight from Saturday morning cartoons to basketball as a kid. I would love to pass that tradition on to my future progeny. I generally enjoy the Notre Dame football broadcasts. NBC clearly knows how to capture the tradition and color of college athletics. So long as it doesn't devolve into Kentucky Derby or Olympics-style "personal stories" we'll be fine. Also, I for one would not mind Bob Costas commentary on at least a few Hoyas games. I know there are haters out there, but the man can turn a phrase.

Don't count out Fox Sports. Their college football coverage of a couple bowlsa and the PAC 12 & B1G championships was the best of all colege football coverage this year and we didn't have to hear the SEC hype.

Not if they keep asking Charles Barkley to do NFL analysis, they're not.

I'm just thankful that there wasn't any Beth Mowins or Doris Burke and I'm a huge fan of LaPhonso Ellis--dates back to his HS playing days when he and Alonzo went head to head and carried over to him joining T-Wolves late in his career. A tremendous person and a nice addition to ESPN broadcasts. Loves the game, knows the game, and makes points about teams involved--and not the damn drivel that the more "hyped" ESPN analysts do during game telecasts. It's like ESPN emplores their announcers to do studio caliber work during a game telecast and no understanding as to why this takes place. Fran Fraschilla, Steve Bardo, LaPhonso Ellis, Bilas, are best they have going right now. Much like their CFB telecasts where Blackledge and Nessler are by far their best broadcast team--they seem to punish true talent and reward clowns who have ADD and focus on a million different things and often nothing related to the teams involved--Vitale and Dykes-who has climbed latter for some reason, Jay Williams (a complete disgrace) Hubert (Gummy from Fletch) Davis, Burke (progressive move that has not been backed up by knowledge or excellence) and Gottlieb who acts like the commissioner of CBB. Pretty much agree with a lot of this, although I find Bardo a little bland. Gottlieb had a terrible start at ESPN (the other guys on the desk looked like they wanted to throw him off the set) but he has gotten a little better -- at least he seems prepared. Hubert is there because he is a jock and isn't good enough to show anybody up. Williams I don't get, maybe he's a favor to Coach K. Dykes's problem is that he has the intensity and delivery of a play-by-play guy -- I like his knowledge but sometimes he steps on his partner. Bobby Knight is a little like that, plus he sounds perpetually irritated, not an endearing quality on television.

Not if they keep asking Charles Barkley to do NFL analysis, they're not. I had to squink to make sure it was him. What were they thinking?? On the margin though, I'll take the Round Mound over some of those other "qualified" commentators they bring on.
