After that hard spill and wobbly walk-off, followed by his return, ineffective play, and subsequent departure, I am wondering if he had any lingering effects last night? today? Anyone know?

In the post-game press conference, JTIII said he was fine. I got the sense from coach that Starks not playing was not injury related.

YEAH BUT in looking at the espn replay of his coming off he was MORE than shaky do worry about a concussion we will see. and ps his play was not markel after the injury about four tos and alot of badly missed shots.. jabril tough but need markels shooting and passing and quick to the hoop for sure GET WELL SOON go hoyas WIL NEED ALL TO PLAY THEIR A+ GAME ON SAT TO BEAT WEST VA AT WEST VA.. if we win that and NEEDS starks to be aok then WE MIGHT HAVE A PRETTY GOOD SEASON tough game coming

I agree with you lichoya. My daughter suffered a concussion playing bball for her school last month and she didn't look as shaky as Starks did. I hope he is OK.

After watching Starks try to make it back to the bench and his subsequent brief re-entry into the game, there is simply no way in hell that his lack of minutes afterward was not somewhat, even predominantly, health-related.
Come on, now. He could barely stand up.
Not to take anything away from Jabril, who was outstanding, minus some of those ill-advised passes.

considering this team has been somewhat banged up. I'd say it's precautionary.

I'm dead certain it was injury related. He rushed back too quickly and it showed.

yeah I was shocked when I saw him back so early. I thought for sure he was concussed the way he wobbled after getting to his feet. I hope they at least tested him when he went to the bench and didn't just rely on his word that he was fine.

It looked like they were testing him on the bench. I think they were just using caution to keep him out the second half.

He was fine. In this day and age of concussion safety prevention in all sports, they would not have let him out there if he was suffering from a concussion.

I don't know about that professor. Look at Colt McCoy playing a whole second half that he didn't even remember. That was in professional football where trainers see concussions all the time and are extremely prepared to diagnose and deal with them. I worry that in college basketball, where the injury is far less common, that concussions could more easily slide through the cracks. Hope Markel is okay, but after seeing him slump onto that trainer's shoulder while trying to stand up, I'm worried.

The standard in game concussion tests have proven to be insufficient even in professional sports where the injury is higher profile.
Hopefully, Markel's getting checked out in more detail today.

To me it looked like they were fixing a contact malfunction I hope Markel is ok and returns soon at full force but I'm not too worried about this team moving around the lineup to help reduce the impact of losing Starks. This team is versatile!

And what about Otto's wrist? That didn't look good and he airballed his next shot. I'm a little sensitive since Austin injured his ankle at the Marquette game last year and then went into a death spiral shooting wise.

Just to clarify, Markel was taken straight to the locker room after staggering to his feet. There was surely more involved than just some amateur guesswork on the bench. In addition, a CasualHoya commentator mentioned that all GU football and basketball players and all divers are baselined before the season as part of the new anti-concussion paradigm.

Looked like he had a previous wrist injury as he had some kind of black tape bandage around it.

In addition, a CasualHoya commentator mentioned that all GU football and basketball players and all divers are baselined before the season as part of the new anti-concussion paradigm. Actually, he was taken straight to the end of the bench and sat down in a chair. One of the bench staff was asking him questions, putting some liquid in his eye. Then Lori Michel came over from her courtside seat (wish her the best in her illness to get back to the bench!) and she consulted on the situation. Then Markel went back in the game not too long after that. I'm guessing that his poor play was a combination of getting banged up and just playing poorly against a very good set of guards and an active defense.

Glad to hear they are baselining the players hopefully in all the contact possible sports including basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer etc. The best concussion tests include both cognitive and reaction time assessments and all possible contact should be avoided until all measures have returned to baseline. Given the depth we have to our bench this year, if Starks has to sit out a few games until fully recovered it is probably as good a part of the big east season as we could hope for a key player to be out. Also wondering if there is any word on Adams?

I thought it was quite questionable that they let him play again last night after that blow to the head. The kid couldn't even walk straight. That looked like a concussion if I've ever seen one. At the very least it made sense to hold him out for the rest of the game for precautionary purposes.
