Loved the holiday greeting. Agree that he is someone with a great future both on and off the court.

I didn't like that decision at all on the fast break. There was nobody underneath to rebound that and it was a 1 on 3. It's one where the coach goes what the h . . . good shot. That was really his only bad decision in the game IMO. But he showed tremendous poise and was the dagger that took Louisville's soul everytime they though they were coming back. It's totally not the smart play in that moment, but I like that he had the confidence to do that. He hit a killer floater in similar (although not as bad) conditions in the Memphis game that ended up righting the ship for us. That level of confidence is going to result in him being an All BE player in the next couple of years.

I kind of disagree. What I like about him is that he has the balls to take a shot like a 1 on 3 pull up jumper or a semi-contested 3 when Kuric is sort of paying attention but not really. His confidence is off the charts, and while he doesn't force a lot, he also knows when he can take a risk. Now this is where I disagree with JT3. Shortly after hitting that shot at the top of the foul line, he hit a 3pt shot early in the shot clock. The next stoppage in play, he was substituted for by JT3. I can only think that JT3 was sitting him because of the two quick shots early in the shot clock, eventhough he made both. If that was the reason, then it does not square with the "take the best shot" rationale this system is designed for. Eventhough Starks shot a 1 on 3 two pointer, it was a high percentage jump shot at the top of the key. I don't think he or his teammates would have gotten a better shot later in the clock, so that was the "best shot". The following 3pt shot ,though early in shot clock was an uncontested shot, ie, "best shot".

His ability to get off the 3 reminds me a little of Curtis Staples. Starks is more of a complete player though.

Staples release was 10 times quicker than Markel's...

Staples release was 10 times quicker than Markel's... Yup, Staples had a quick release and got elevation on his 3. Starks is almost a set shooter. He does jump a little but not much. I feel in general that these types of shooters are more consistent when they are wide open because there are less variables in their shot. The way Starks is playing right now, reminds me of Steve Kerr. Not really a true point guard but a guy who can knockdown the wide open 3 while hanging out on the perimeter to keep spacing. And Kerr was one of the greatest of all time at that.

When Markel closed the press conference by wishing everyone there "Happy Holidays!", did anyone else think that was the opening shot from the future congressman? Will we one day see Markel as House Speaker while Jon Wallace is in the White House? I did like it. Showed that he's a nice, aware kid. JWall is just about my favorite player from the JT3 era - not best, just favorite, because of the way he represented the U - but Markel is showing some similar poise. You can tell he's being thoughtful as he listens to a question. My wife had the same reaction when he took that pull-up: "Noooooo, Starks!" and then "wow what a clutch shot!"

With regard to the pull up jumper on the break.... I have no problem with it if it's part of his arsenal... And it seems like it is...he's got to take it. It's not like we're talking about Jeremiah Rivers taking the shot... It's markel and its an open 15 footer.
He had a similar pull up jumper when up only 5 against Memphis late in the game. We need a guy with the confidence and skill to take and hit the shot and it's him. Keep shooting markel.

It's called a "heat check" fellas. When a shooter is feeling "it" he is gonna take some shots that are a little out of character. Like the pull up in Kuric's grill. How can we have a problem with a scoring pg shooting an uncontested pull up from 12ft? Every guard on our team should have that green light. Outside of JT55.........lol

Wide open elbow jumpers are not high degree of difficulty. These are college players, not a rec league.
