Tom Williams has resigned as Yale's football coach after the university investigated whether he lied on his resume about being a candidate for a Rhodes Scholarship while a student at Stanford.
Williams was 16 - 14 over his three year tenure.

Would be an epic fail of a hire for Yale. If anyone should be credited with Georgetown's resurgence, it's Patenaude.

Clearly, Coach Kelly is more interested in the Yale position than continuing at Georgetown.
How is this news going to effect our recruiting for next season?

As a hoyaparent I think you should know better than anyone that the school almost recruits itself. I know a lot of recruits who have come to Georgetown in spite of, rather than for Coach Kelly in the past 5 years.

Clearly, Coach Kelly is more interested in the Yale position than continuing at Georgetown. I'm not going to fault anyone for taking an interview if he's up front about it. John Thompson interviewed for and was offered jobs at Oklahoma (1980) and the Denver Nuggets (1988) and no one would argue he was no longer interested in Georgetown. Outside Georgetown, at least, coaching is a transitory business and career coaches know you either act in your interests or be subject to others. Ralph Friedgen probably thought he could retire at Maryland, but a new AD arrives and out he goes. Darrell Royal wins 7 SWC titles and a national title in nine seasons--one year after a 10-2 season, Texas finishes 5-5-1 and he is suddenly "retired" at the age of 52. Joe Paterno has one employer for 61 years, and is summarily fired over the phone. There are no guarantees in coaching. Kelly had eight different coaching stints before GU, and he knows as well as anyone that if a job opens up and you're in the mix, you listen and then decide. His marketability has never been higher than right now. There are probably other factors as well. Yale football is well funded, has an endowed head coaching position, and isn't worried about promises of facilities that never get built. Add in the rumblings that a number of PL schools will go scholarship in football and Georgetown will be left at non-scholarship, and that's another intangible that would keep coaches up at night. Yes, both schools need a coach heading into the big recruiting weekends. Yale has publicly stated they need someone on board by the Jan. 13-15 visits, so this should be settled one way or another by next week.

First they poach Coach Hal, now they come for our head coach? Put em' on the schedule yearly. This has budding rivalry written all over it. On another note, does anyone know if/what type of recruiting we are actually doing right now? Are we getting kids in or just sitting around awaiting a decision here?

Now that the "cat is out of the bag," what's next? Does the administration just sit and wait?
My concern is if Coach Kelly were to be offered and accepts the Yale position, clearly an upgrade for Kevin, who might he take with him.
What is the status of the balance of our coaching staff? If Coach Kelly were to leave, the assistants will all be re-evaluated by the new head coach.
If Coach Kelly stays at GU, I hope he does, is he then just waiting for the next opportunity. How will that effect the assistant coaches?
If one of our current assistants were head coach material, has he been approached by the administration as a potential candidate for the top job.
What's better, the head coaching position at GU, or OC at Yale?
We made significant progress last season, I would not like to see a loss in continuity.

Joe Paterno has one employer for 61 years, and is summarily fired over the phone. Kind of a weird one to cite. I think the point on Paterno was how it was communicated vs. whether it was justified. As for Kelly, he would be a fool not to take the Yale job if it is offered. There are so many advantages (with the obvious exception of having to live in New Haven). If as I suspect, he was the "blind squirrel who found the acorn" in 2011, he needs to take advantage of the opportunity if offered. I don't think another one like it is in his future.

hoyahopeful, we need to give Coach Kelly some credit. I can only imagine the promises made to Kelly when he accepted the head coaching position at Georgetown; a commitment to the football program, new and improved facilities, increased budget, financial support for our scholar athletes.
Most of those promises never materialized.
I trust that one of the requirements for the Yale job is going to be fund raising and alumni relations, not Coach Kelly's strong suits. But with the support of the University community and Yale's well structured football alumni organization, he should do just fine.
A "blind squirrel," I think not.

As of Monday afternoon, two newspapers were reporting UConn assistant and former Yale assistant Don Brown had been offered the job. Late Monday, Brown reportedly removed his name from consideration.

A "blind squirrel," I think not. My opinion of Coach Kelly's ability has developed since his arrival at Georgetown. I am genuinely glad that he has his football supporters (like yourself). I am simply not among them.

Hoyahopeful, we all have our faults and weaknesses. We are all only as good as those we surround ourselves with. Coach Kelly has had a limited budget as compared to other Patriot League institutions. Yes, he may have stayed with the old OC too long, that was a function of his loyalty, and not having the resources to go out and upgrade. If the Hofstra program had not been dismantled, I don't think the current OC would have considered the move. We got lucky.
My guess is that Coach Kelly will not get the Yale position. From the media reports, he was not their first choice, their first choice withdrew his name from consideration after being offered the job, and now they seem to be expanding the search.
I would be pleased if Coach Kelly returned next year. If we put in another solid year, maybe your opinion will change.

I am simply not among them. Cosigned. I can't imagine that Yale would do this to their program. This would be a blessing for Georgetown on the heels of last year. Perfect time to bring in a much, much better HC than Kelly.

Loved the statement, so I'm going to copy and paste here:
"In a statement provided to HoyaSaxa.com, Kelly wrote:
I'm flattered to have been considered for the position, but have decided to withdraw my name from consideration and will remain at Georgetown. We are coming off of our best season since I've been here and with a tremendous group of young men returning, I look forward to continuing to build this program and compete for a Patriot League Championship in 2012. My family and I enjoy being a part of the Georgetown community and we love living in Washington, D.C. We really want to finish what we've started here at Georgetown."
Great to hear. I really hope he can finish what he's started here too.
