I was just about to start my own thread on this very issue. I applaud Mr. O'Brien's comment regarding the "Jesuit ideals" of St. Joe's. The bigger issue, for sure, is that the NCAA chooses not to, as O'Brien states it, "set a precedent by doing the right thing".
This story will likely explode in the mass media very soon.

Wow. Phil Martelli doesn't come across too well in this story, does he? Really outrageous.

If you bother looking into it, the kid is no saint. He was disciplined a few times and suspended while in school for supposedly stealing laptops. This goes beyond Martelli being cranky. The kid tried to go through a loophole and was denied. He got a second chance at SJU and blew it. I have friends who work in the St Joes AD and they aren't legally able to spill the details but they can say there's a side to the story not being heard.

PhillyHoya, I've heard similar things from a friend I trust who is fairly close to the SJU program. The fact is, though, regardless of any wrongs that Martelli or the rest of the SJU athletic department feel have been done to themselves in this situation, they're only hurting themselves by letting this drag on, both in terms of negative recruiting, and in negative national attention, in what should be a great PR season for them. If the kid is a jerk, let him out and be done with it, and don't hurt yourself any more in the process.

Why does any of that stop St. Joe's from giving him his release? And if he was no saint, and committed crimes, shouldn't they have kicked him off the team rather than hold up his release so he could play somewhere else? What you're posting reads as just character assassination of the kid.

The Hawks have no moral right to make decisions for him. And it's not a "loophole" - this is the same ruling that let Wisconsin's QB move over from NC State and whatshisname move from Duke to play QB for Syracuse. It rewards kids who graduate and is constantly referred to as a great NCAA rule.

Yeah, Martelli doesn't come out looking too great here. But of course, that's only based on O'Brien's version, and Martelli's version probably will never come out due to privacy issues. So who is assassinating whose character? Obviously, not all of the facts are out on this one -- O'Brien was more than willing to overlook the fact that he was suspended for stealing laptops and Martelli stood by him. Wonder what else he could have left out...

Wonder what else he could have left out... It doesn't matter. There is no reason for St. Joe's to not grant him his release. Every time stuff like this happens, it makes a further argument that the NCAA is something like legalized bondage and that the South Park episode was straight on the mark. When Pitt's football coach left to coach Arizona State, he just left. Pitt didn't have to grant him his release as a pro forma step. But if any of those players decide to leave - you know, leave because the coach who recruited them is now gone - Pitt has to release them. It's a chain. O'Brien could have stolen enough laptops to put UConn's team to shame for a decade - and, as long as he has his degree, he should be allowed to transfer. Martelli has no defense. None.

O'brien's nothing but a liar and just looking for money? Amen. More and more these coaches are looking like giant-egoed maniacs. Who cares what O'Brien left out? No matter what transpired, withholding his release so the kid doesn't get his final year of eligibility isn't the way to handle it.

Definitely doesn't make St. Joe's look good and O'brien seems to be smart by bringing this issue public and strong arming the situation

He was eligible to play at St. Joe's if he stayed so there is no basis for St. Joe's or anyone else to say he did something that merits suspension. This looks to be exactly what he said it was - petty vindictiveness.

I was also wondering about the placement in SI versus ESPN, but then wondered if ESPN has a bit of a conflict of interest (real or perceived), as they employ Joe Lunardi who is (or last time I checked still was) VP of Public Affairs for SJU.
