So...anyone have any insights as to why there has been no movement with Greg Monroe? Seems like he must be really disappointed that nobody offered close to a max deal. I wonder where he goes from here - a 1-year deal with another team that Detroit will match (but at least it will be higher than the current 1-year option)? There are different theories floating. One is that according to one Detroit beat writer/columnist not one NBA exec looks at Greg as a max player. This theory is a little absurd considering the guys who DID get big contracts over the previous weeks but I digress. Another theory is that every NBA team realizes that the Pistons will eventually match any offer sent Greg's way. There is some truth to that too but it is dubious to think no one would try it anyway if they wanted t bring Greg to their team. The other theory is that this summer was more of a buyer's market than a sellers' market and thus Greg Monroe has the misfortune of being a free agent at the wrong time. Frankly I'm just as upset that Greg hasn't gotten any respect from Team USA. Two or so bigs have pulled out and yet Greg can't even get an invite to tryout again. I could be totally off base but I have felt for awhile now that K has it in for Greg for picking Gtown over Duke.

At least some of those early max contracts probably also had something to do with the 72 hour matching period being used as a weapon in the Lebron-Carmelo free agency circus.

I actually think Greg may have declined the possibility of USA duty as long as he's a free agent. Seems like too much of a risk when he has so much uncertainty.

Greg also suffers a bit from the current fads in terms of what people look for in post players. As a center he doesn't protect the rim the way you would want. And as a power forward he doesn't stretch the floor.
It's hard to argue he doesn't deserve a max or near max deal given the other salaries that guys have gotten, his consistently efficient production, and his young age.

And as a power forward he doesn't stretch the floor. Yep. Those two areas are the knocks some NBA folks are obsessed over when it comes to criticizing him. I think when it comes to other players in his position Greg ranks only about #17 out of 30 in terms of effectively defending the post and yet you would think he was #30 out of 30 the way that some NBA bloggers attack him.

Maybe although I'm not exactly hearing that. What isn't up for debate was that going into the summer he wasn't part of the original tryout participants in the first place. But DeMarcus Cousins is. Cousins numbers may warrant his inclusion but that guy has been nothing but a cancer for his team and has had too many discipline problems with his team. He gets called for Ts on a regular basis too and yet this is the guy K and Colangelo wants to represent their precious Team USA? The same duo who some claim used "character issues/reputation" as a basis to decline allowing Iverson the opportunity for a tryout in 2006 despite Iverson earning that right by being one of the only two original American players who did not pull out of the 2004 Olympics. I can't hate those two hypocrites enough.

I can't hate those two hypocrites enough. They seemed to have "solved" the problem. ow.ly/zPOJt Didn't Greg Monroe foul out 2 Plumlees in January 2010, and he can't get a phone call? I distinctly remember asking at that game if there was a third Plumlee who could foul out. I didn't realize I was a few years early. Sure, Cousins might be a headcase, but do people think that LeBron, et. al. are gonna put up with that on Team USA? Is it really that big of a concern? What a joke.

Congrats to kel, work hard on your game and force the NBA to reconsider down the road.

Related to NBA Hoyas as far as concerns Roy and the Pacers, Paul George broke his leg in horrific fashion in a Team USA scrimmage. I suggest not watching the video but, if you have morbid curiosity (as I did), it's available on deadspin. Best wishes for a full recovery.

K obviously has never forgotten the foul mouthed tirade that got Greg T'd up at Cameron. Remember K is all about character. Just ask Corey Maggete and Myron Piggie. In other news, Paul George's injury has been put on the coaching record of Pete Gaudet.

Zach Lowe has a nice explanation of how this trend is playing out, with respect to Monroe and other similarly labeled players. I hope someone gets Greg out of Detroit on a shorter deal, even for less $, and he is able to get a chance to shine. Clearly the Pistons have cast their lot with Drummond and are stuck with the stupid Smith signing, which just doesn't leave room for GM to operate effectively.

Is he eligible to reclassify to 2015? Would like to see us go all in on his recruitment, instead of throwing offers at the likes of "rim protector" Tacko Fall. :^) Seriously, all of those were nasty. Love that guy.

Most striking thing about that list is the presence of entirely large state institutions other than GU and Puke. It is amazing what we do as a small private institution.
