Don't know if anyone on this board has the ear of Hoya Blue leadership, but I'll repeat what I've said in either this thread or another earlier thread: do away with the Utah State "I Believe" chant. Now. It is embarrassing.

I think busing could work again for weekend games. You don't need as many buses as some of the calculations, because they don't all leave at the same time and they return for second and third trips. But weekeday games which are more of an attendance problem it doesn't make as much sense with all the traffic.
As an undergrad I usually cabbed to the games (it was about $12 and if you put 4 people in the cab it was barely more expensive than metro and a lot faster, but I don't know how much fares have gone up in the past 2 years since they switched off the zone system) or was going with hoya blue in an AD van to help set up, but I would take the buses home when they were still running them and used the shuttles back from Rosslyn they provided after they stopped running buses to Verizon.

SFHoya99 is right as to why busing stopped. But really, campus is better served by mass transit than 90% of the country, so I really don't see why the lack of door-to-door conveyance is such a big deal. Off the top of my head, here are all the ways I can think of to get from campus to the Verizon Center: 1. Cab (cheaper if shared) 2. Walk less than an hour. 3. D2, D6, or G2 bus to Dupont Metro, train to Chinatown 4. GUTS bus to Rosslyn or Dupont, train to Metro Center or Chinatown 5. 38B to Rosslyn, train to Metro Center 6. Gtown-Union Station circulator to Mt. Vernon Square, walk a few blocks to arena 7. Take 32 or 36 bus to Foggy Bottom Metro, train to Metro Center 8. Take 32 or 36 bus to 7th & Pennsylvania NW, walk a few blocks This really isn't that hard, especially since you can get real-time info for all Metro and Circulator buses from a cell phone nowadays. The thing is, all of those options (besides cab) can take you an hour on the weekend and are no easier than hopping on the shuttle to the Metro that they provide for bball games (extremely limited GUTS service on weekends). If we want more student fans during these games, you are going to have to bus them directly there. That's not at all true, especially if you use the real-time bus information that's available (that is, all the buses now have GPS so you can see exactly when they're coming). All of the Metro or Circulator buses can be picked up on Resevoir, Wisconsin, or M. Should we just pave over Copley lawn to make room for all the buses needed?

I mean, for weekday games now, I'm taking the Metro in from Fairfax and it takes about an hour. I am not calling for the university to pick me up and drive me in.

1st of all most people don't actually track their public transportation. It took me an hour to get in to the game yesterday by metro when it usually take 30, because of all the rail work they were doing, so I had to wait 20 minutes for a train. You usually have to wait 20 minutes for a train on weekends since they run so infrequently and they're also doing maintenance on weekends. And busses often end up sitting in traffic for quite a while during week days.

[quote author=russkyhoya board=general thread=24979 post=467298 time=1323669869Also, given what rush hour traffic looks like these days, a trip to Cap Centre via several freeways would probably be not much longer than slogging through downtown DC. [/quote]
Your bus route to the UsAir Arena must have been a lot different that the routes taken by the busses I was on.

Your bus route to the UsAir Arena must have been a lot different that the routes taken by the busses I was on. I was in 11th grade when the place was imploded (I love that word), so I admit I never had the pleasure of taking such a trip. If I did have to get from campus to 1 Harry S Truman Drive, Landover, MD 20785 though, I would take the Key Bridge to Jeff Davis Highway/VA-110 to I-395 North to 295 (Anacostia Freeway) to 50 to Landover Road (something like this). GoogleMaps says 38 minutes. It can take half an hour to get from campus to Verizon during rush hour.

Obviously US HOYATALK FANS are willing to make the trek, but we're trying to find ways to get more students to the games and simply noting that a 1-hour commute each way isn't helping.

It generally underestimates it (and it definitely underestimates the travel time for a vehicle like a school bus, which is going to take even more time in traffic)

More students should take advantage of the fact that it's only a 20-25 minute bike ride between campus and Verizon. Probably the fastest way door-to-door.
(And with Capital Bikeshare stations on both ends, in addition to plenty of new-ish bike lanes and racks for personal bikes, it's much easier to make that trip than it was in years past).

I think we're getting a little too caught up in the transportation discussion here. Transportation really isn't the issue. Home games so far this year have simply been poor opponents taking place at inopportune times. Its simple. Attendance will be far better at the beginning of next semester. As a current student, I can say that transportation is rarely an issue. Would it be nice to have buses bringing us right to the Verizon Center? Sure. Is it necessary? No, not really. Put 4 people in a cab and you're good to go. Its a 20 minute trip.
People on campus believe in this team just as much as any other team over the past few years, perhaps even more so. In fact, there is definitely more excitement. Game attendance has simply been the victim of unfortunate circumstances at the end of the semester.

Students have been utterly disappointing in every game since Savannah State, but McDonough should have anticipated this with the line up of games.
One of NJIT or Howard should have been played at McDonough to keep students engaged this semester. We will see if things bounce back to the normalcy of the past 5 seasons come conference play.
But looking ahead at the schedule, Memphis, Providence, and Marquette are too soon to have more than one section open, is Cincinnati 1/9 before or after break?
After that we have Rutgers on a Saturday (not sure, will be full if its the first game of the semester), UConn on Wednesday (should be full), USF on a Saturday (expect disappointment), St. John's on a Sunday (not quite full), Hyped Saturday game against Nova (should be full) and Big Monday against ND (less than full).

watching NOVA/BU on ESPN, looks like they have about the same number of seats filled as we had for Howard.
Where's this N OVA NATION they are so proud of?

The next student ticket after American is Rutgers on Jan 21st. So thats 4 solid games without students.

I was just thinking back to when I was a student. Then, HB was always concerned about OOC student attendance (which was always low, in our opinion). But I was wondering how "low" I was complaining about back then. So I randomly remembered we played Oral Roberts in December one year. This was December 9, 2006 just before exams. We had dropped out of the rankings at this point, and were 5-3 with losses to ODU (who could forget that), Oregon, and Duke. (Thank you GUhoyas.com archive). We hadn't really won a big game yet Yet student attendance looked like this (and there were student sections on both sides of the court) www.guhoyas.com/view.gal?id=4220 (go to 4th shot in) Obviously there are different circumstances (we were on the rise after our tourney performance in 06, etc), etc. But, its still a comparable game at a comparable time of year.
