Whoever thought it was a good idea to start that Utah State chant in the student section, it wasn't. First off, I'm not sure we should be cribbing it at all. USU does it to perfection, and it feels odd stealing that from them. Second, if we are going to do that, please only do it when he have both student sections up. Third, don't do that when we're up 30 points playing NJIT. Of course we're going to win. I know people know it from Utah State, but they aren't the only school that does it. I know Navy does it as well and I'd be surprised if other schools don't do it as well. Also, at this point, any cheering by the students that are there is a good thing.

The student attendance vs NJIT looked to be about double the size of the IUPUI crowd so I suppose things are looking up.

I actually thought the students were a lot better today. The student section they had set up was full. Obviously not the 2 whole full student sections I'd prefer, but better than IUPUI. That was my impression as well. Even on the "empty" end, there were students going way up along at least one of the corner sections. if you think today was bad compared to, say, a lesser OOC game last year, you either weren't there or weren't paying attention. I do think some of the cheers sounded a little weird - I'm not familiar with Utah State but maybe that's one of the ones that came across that way. No that corner section is my young alumni section, not students.

Today's student section was "better". That being said... I'd like to compare and contrast the atmosphere on campus between now and 05-08 (my undergrad years).
I'm currently a post-bac pre-med student at Georgetown - meaning that I am taking undergraduate science classes as prerequisites for medical school. I graduated in 2008 and as I might be a bit biased, since I was in the pep band, and had lots of friends who were in either hoya blue or cheerleaders, so they tended to be more enthusiastic - but I'd still estimate that on my floor both freshman (JTIII's first year) and sophomore year at least 90% of the people had season tickets. I regularly saw EVERYONE I knew at games (unless they chose to sit on the "non band side"), and gray shirts in class on gamedays were a common sight.
Both last year, and this year, in my science classes, I've talked to kids (mostly juniors and sophomores), and the vast majority that I've asked if they're "going to the game tonight" have told me they don't have season tickets - we're not good, its too far away, i'm premed - I've heard every excuse, but no one has said "oh i don't like basketball/sports/having fun/what have you". Even when I took orgo last year, I didn't miss a single home game and managed to squeeze in FOUR road trips (including cincy... ugh) so I doubt its just the school work that is holding kids back. Sure I may be more hardcore than most, but it strikes me as just ODD that so many of the students now really just don't seem to care. I'm befuddled. But the atmosphere this year is considerably more pathetic than in the past years - yeah, i went there with pathetic. It is. Students, sorrry I'm not sorry.

I mean, I think everyone here is in agreement that the student section is not up to par. But we've also established no students (even HB board) read this so we're kind of preaching to the choir. Maybe people can write to the AD and HB and tell them to kick it into gear....
(granted this is useless until Big East because exams start this week and then the students leave, but still can't hurt to get them thinking of ways to get butts in seats come January)

1. i agree with lizziebeth that its not peak time for attendance with exams. 2. its just disappointing/sucks that memphis is after campus is closed for break.

Hopefully winning and being ranked will reverse this trend. There are a lot of students who get tickets but don't go to every game if they don't think the team is very good. I remember waltzing to the front row for the JMU game in '06-'07 (we were 4-3 at the time). If we can get to the BE without another loss I think we'll see a notable rise in attendance.
I don't know if student ticket sales are down, but if they are, the home schedule might be part of it. I don't think many students sit down and analyze the schedule to determine if tickets are worth it, but there might be less motivation to purchase without the AD being able to use the "only way to guarantee a ticket to [CUSE/UCONN/DUKE] is to buy season tickets" marketing ploy. I think that many of the more casual fans (not to be confused with readers of CasualHoya) are drawn by the prospect of going to "big" games, whether BE or non-league. Most of those are obviously against BE teams, but I think that anyone who cares enough to make the BE/non-league distinction is probably going to buy season tickets anyway.* With the Memphis game coming over break, Villanova is really the only "big" home game on the schedule.
*Of course, those could be the exact people who bought season tickets, but have stayed home so far.

If they choose a random student to win free Lazik at every game, that should boost student attendance some. Spread the word amongst your bespectacled friends.

Winning will change this more than a better OOC schedule in my opinion. People will come out for truly big games (Syracuse, UConn, Nova, Duke, or some top 3 team). But I don't think there would have been a completely packed house for Bama on Thursday had that been a home game, despite the fact that that would have been a high profile game. That being said, if we're still ranked when campus opens back up in January, I expect a significantly larger crowd.

III built this dismissal OOC schedule so that he could bring the freshmen along his way. The season ticket holders still pay full price for these non-competitive games and they don't show up either. The real season starts New Years eve with the exce4ption of the Memphis rematch. If I were 20 years old again, I would rather party hardy on friday and get up when I feel like it on Saturday.

Student attendance was much better yesterday.
That being said, I'll echo the sentiments above re: Utah State's chant. If you do it in an uncoordinated fashion, it looks weak and stupid. Also, if you do it when you're up 30+ in the 2nd half against NJIT instead of prior to tipoff like it's supposed to be done, it makes you look even more stupid. Just things to keep in mind, students.

If any student is reading this (its finals time, someone has to be procrastinating), Eamonn Brennan and Dana O'Neil discuss the best student sections on this pod cast espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=7330983Key in on Duke (obviously - but they also make fun of them while complementing them) and Pitt.

getting tired of the hoya blue wearing gray, why doesn't the HHC by them BLUE T-shirts.? Because gray is 1) more distinctive (most schools don't have gray as a school color) and 2) pops better against the dark seats in Verizon. Lots of schools wear shades of blue...don't you want to be unique? BLEED BLUE, WEAR GRAY.

The gray also matches the uniforms the team wears on the court, which is nice.
