A little late to this, but what a great game/win. Obviously some things to work on, as have been pointed out through the thread, but I am really enjoying watching this team. Nate has me a bit worried at this point, but hopefully he will break out of this funk. Everyone else seems to be playing with a lot of energy and playing very hard on both ends. Can't wait to see how this season unfolds!

Agreed. We all love Otto, but Wesley Witherspoon was Otto with a better handle coming out of high school. He's immature and hasn't had the best coaching, but he's very talented. Same goes for guys like Black, Jackson, Barton, Thomas, etc ... I'd love for JTIII to get his hands on guys like these. Are you serious about Wesley? I totally disagree. And, again, I don't think much of the 22-year old freshmen/sophs on Memphis despite their fashionable headbands and their ability to look good on the fastbreak. Didn't think much of them last season and still don't think much of them. They have talent but they are not all that. Not at this point at least. I'm 100% serious. Wesley Witherspoon was one of the most versatile wings in his class and a walking nightmare to defend. He could play and defend three positions and even started a few games at point for Memphis his freshman season. This time last year, he was a first-round pick in the draft the moment he left school. However, he's incredibly immature and his attitude isn't one of a leader, and that's what Memphis expected him to be last season. Ask scouts, skill-wise, he's what we think of Otto but Otto is BY FAR more mature and BY FAR a much more team-oriented player. I look at a team with players like Will Barton, Joe Jackson, Chris Crawford, Tarik Black, Adonis Thomas and wonder what they would look like a good coach, which Pastner isn't. They come into games like they have no game-plan and he's terrible at making anything resembling in-game adjustments. But as far as individual talent is concerned, they have it in droves.

MCI, last year's team was 20-5, 9-4 and ranked 9th in the country. Then they lost 6 of the last 7 games and finished 21-11.
They didn't speed up when they were winning 8 straight or slow down when they lost 5 straight. They played the same style of play, but Freeman made only 6 of 43 3-point shots in the final 7 games and Wright got hurt.
The variable wasn't the style of play or the Princeton offense. The team was good when their top two players made shots and not so good when they didn't.

they'll be fired up when they meet GU next month. And the Hoyas will be fired up too!!! It'll be another classic game! I wish Memphis would join the Big East...

And if your star player is having a slump in terms of making long jumpshots in a structured half-court offense, then perhaps one needs to do something to get him out of that slump. Something like encourage him to drive more for hoops or get him going by getting him easy baskets off fast breaks. But instead we got Freeman taking his usual 9 to 12 shots a game with us fans praying he would hit a high percentage rather than a low one. Whatever. Try getting the guy a lot more attempts with the hope that eventually he'll knock down a few in a row and get out of his slump. If it is true that Freeman actually took 43 three pointers in his last seven games even though he was struggling, well, then I must say that was part of the problem. Have him try mixing it up more as he did in his junior season or at least try to put him in a position to do so. In 2010-2011 relying too much on the three-point shot was also a problem for guys like Jason and Hollis (no matter how good Hollis was at making them). But in these first five games I've seen the two of them attack the hoop via drives more than I recall seeing them do all of last season. Why is that? It isn't translating into a lot of free throws just yet but is an improvement. And I think III must have emphasized that they work on that aspect of their respective games. The main point I'm making is that all good coaches must know you can't and shouldn't rely on jumpshots. Even the best of shooters are going to have their share of bad days as well as games in which defenses won't allow them to get clean looks. So if you want to win regardless, you have to find other ways to get those needed baskets. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. But I'm sure we can at least concur that, Chris or no Chris, there was no excuse for scoring under 50 points against Cincy.

As usual, Memphis has great athletes that are mediocre basketball players. Pastner can recruit but he hasn't shown that he can develop talent. The vast majority of these kids likely won't improve their draft stock playing for him. They leave as the same players they came in. I'm very happy to say that that's not usually the case with our Hoyas.

While I generally agree with what you just posted, be careful about the stones you throw because a case can be made that Georgetown didn't develop Freeman to his potential.

Remember, Austin developed diabetes and had to learn to live with that. Most of us have no idea how hard that is on an athlete.

Austin finished as the 7th all time scorer for us, and was third all time in threes. I know we all want perfection, but we'll never get it. And Austin wasn't perfect. But he averaged 9.1, 11.4, 16.5, and 17.6 for his four years. Nice progression. And that YouCon game was a sight to behold. Could he have grown more as a player, especially on D? Yes. But so could everyone. And as Ed pointed out, diabetes is no joke. IMO, III did a fine job.

Freeman was a tremendous player for us. He was a tremendous player offensive player in college. No doubt about it. But him not being even more tremendous and failing to get drafted is a bit of a let down. He came in with some very lofty expectations.

I'm just watching the game - rather than doing what I should be, i.e., sleeping. Now I don't watch ESPN much - just games, and that's it. So imagine my shock when I see Gottdweeb and Jonathan Coachman come on at the half. When did Jonathan Coachman go legit? The last time I heard his name, he was still working for Vinnie Mac and Co.

Yes, I thought the same thing. Either he was really really tired and running on fumes or he was under the influence.
