This is pretty much a parent's worst college nightmare.

Does anyone care the kid might have been throwing a firebomb at foreign security forces? If a foreign student in the US threw a rock at Metro, we'd have no problem locking him up. I'm finding it hard to feel bad for this kid (his family, yes; the kid himself, not at all).

Might? Who knows what really happened. They also just could have been at the wrong place at the wrong time (Although, it was a stupid decision to be at that place at that time).

The State Dept is very clear in its travel advisory:
THREATS TO SAFETY AND SECURITY: On the night of October 9, demonstrations in downtown Cairo, in the vicinity of Tahrir Square, turned violent and resulted in numerous deaths and hundreds of injuries. A series of elections for the lower and upper houses of parliament isare scheduled to take place from November 2011 through March 2012. Politically-motivated rallies and demonstrations are likely to occur in the period leading to and likely following the elections. In the past nine months, demonstrations have degenerated on several occasions into violent clashes between police and protesters, in some instances resulting in deaths, injuries, and extensive property damage. U.S. citizens are urged to remain alert to local security developments and to be vigilant regarding their personal security. The U.S. Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens to avoid all demonstrations, as even peaceful ones can quickly become unruly and lead to clashes with security forces or even rival groups.
Also, read the quote of the GU student's father, who concedes his son could have thrown it at police:
“If he got caught up in the whole freedom thing, I suppose he could have thrown it at the police,” Sweeney said of his son. “I could see where he’d have some disagreement with tyranny.”

Read the interview with the GU student's father. That kid sounds more like Tea Party material!!
Derrik Sweeney had headed to Egypt in August filled with idealism, the youthful vigor of a conservative 19-year-old and a firm belief “in American freedom,” his father said Tuesday. “I suppose thoughts of the American revolution probably were things that probably crossed his mind. He’s a huge follower of U.S. constitutional history and the Revolutionary War.
