So here it is, the Thursday evening before a Saturday game and how come there is not a thread about our upcoming game and opponent? Ok, it is a cupcake game but still... Guess I'll start, although I suck at this kind of thing. Savannah State - -'10 -'11 Results: 12-18, with 10 wins in their last 11 games -This year is their first year of full membership in the MEAC -Tallest player is listed as 6'8" forward Jyles Smith -No seniors and 8 (!) juniors on the roster -Last meeting was on 11/21/09 when the Hoyas won 63-44 -and of course they are coached by Horace Broadnax, former Hoya standout from '82 - '86 who is the reason why the teams are playing at all Website: ssuathletics.com/index.aspx?tab=basketball&path=mbballAny other relevant facts that anyone can share?

Didn't we play the Tigers in Savannah in the 09-10 season? I remember the 100 point 08 game being at home.

On the Hoya side Tyler Adams is back in a walking boot this week and he's unsure whether or not he'll be able to play on saturday. Not sure if it's the same ankle or not.

If their tallest player is 6'8" we should be able to get away with Nate or Hollis playing the 5 if Henry has lots of foul problems but we are going to need a true back-up center at some point this season. Not encouraging.

I'd expect Mikael to back up Henry if Tyler's out. Kind of expect at times even if Tyler is healthy.

Hollis playing the 5 would definitely be worthy of a group retch. We could stage a barf-out movement in protest. Perhaps it might even make ESPN.

Prolly drop some more pounds less pressure knees and ankles it would help tremendously if he lost some more weight he won't lose strength that's for sure...dude has heart too...

Some rapid reports that relate to the game tomorrow:
Nov. 10, 2011 10:24 p.m. - by Elliott Smith - Everyone has opening-game jitters Despite having played in four games during the Hoyas’ trip to China, the five freshmen will get their first taste of college action in Saturday’s opener. “Without a doubt, they are going to have jitters,” coach John Thompson III said. “The coach is going to have jitters.”
Nov. 10, 2011 9:43 p.m. - by Elliott Smith - Clark says no overlooking Savannah St. Senior G Jason Clark said the Hoyas will not look past Savannah State in Saturday’s season opener despite the Tigers’ subpar record last season. “We’ve played them in the past. They are a scrappy team,” Clark said. “We are going to have to go out and compete the whole game.”
Nov. 10, 2011 6:43 p.m. - by Elliott Smith - No freshman in starting five Coach John Thompson III said that despite an influx of talented freshman and some spirited competition in practice, the starting lineup for Saturday’s game against Savannah State would consist of experienced players G Jason Clark, G Markel Starks, F Hollis Thompson, F Nate Lubick and C Henry Sims.
Nov. 10, 2011 1:51 p.m. - by Elliott Smith - Scouting report: Savannah State Georgetown opens the season Saturday against Savannah State, a MEAC squad that went 12-18 last year but which won 10 of its final 11 games. The Tigers have no seniors on their roster, and are led by junior G Preston Blackmon (12.5 ppg) and sophomore F Jyles Smith (7.2 rpg).

The fact that Savannah State finished the season strongly is actually the result of a horrible schedule at the end of the season, rather than any major improvement. For example, they played three games against non Division 1 opponents. Here are the RPI's of their last 12 opponents: 275, 336, Non Div. 1, Non Div. 1, 293, 320, Non Div. 1, 282, 178, 303, 320, 72.
In contrast, in November and December, they had a number of opponents with top 100 RPIs: Dayton (79), Cincinnati (36), Marshall (72), Fairfield (96), Clemson (55), and Kansas State in January (22).
I don't want to jinx our team, but we really should win this game pretty handily.

Thanks for the posting the rapid reports HSB. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I'm always proven to have been overly optimistic regarding the Hoyas but I'm expecting Henry to put it all together his senior year, a la Hilton Armstrong for UCONN. I love the media's low expectations for the team, and I hope they prove them wrong. Good luck guys.

It seems to me that Henry often does well in these early season matchups when he is the tallest guy on the court, so I expect him to dominate. The million dollar question is can he be consistently good all year? If he can give us 25 solid min a game, in any capacity, we should be fine. That is about what we got from Julian last season so I don't think it is asking too much.
