Absolutely classic. Yesterday on the radio show Opie and Anthony (they’re on XM radio), they had an interview with Dick Vitale. If you aren’t familiar with the show, O&A are hilarious, but really mess with the people they interview. Vitale finally calls in and O&A answer and tell him that they aren’t live on the air yet, even though they are. Vitale starts making small talk, and actually sounds really laid back, talking about the weather and what not. Then, they start talking about basketball, and they ask him if he thinks that the college game has been hurt by all the kids going straight to the pros. He says absolutely, and that even though there’s nothing they can do about it, it really does hurt the college game. Again, I have to stress how the whole time Dickie is talking like a normal person, in a normal tone of voice. I could hardly believe it was him.
Then they pretend that they just went on the air, and like he flipped a switch, Dukie V started in with his typical over-excited, cliché-spewing persona. It sounded so fake and so forced at that point after listening to him talk normally for about 5 minutes, he just really came across as a total fraud. The first question they ask him is while “on the air” is what he thinks about the quality of college basketball this season, and whether the departure of talent to the pros has hurt the game. Dukie V goes off saying how that doesn’t affect college basketball at all, it’s better than it ever has been. A total contradiction to what he had said a mere 5 minutes earlier.
To continue making him look stupid, every time he mentioned a team name, Anthony would just say “Yeah, but don’t you think the injuries are going to be a factor with that team?” And then Dukie V would agree and say that it would. Literally, after asking the exact same question about 8 different teams, you’d think he’d realize that they weren’t seriously asking the questions, and that he shouldn’t agree with them every time.
Hilarious from start to finish. We all knew the guy was a total fraud, but hearing him unknowingly make a total fool of himself on the air was priceless. I’m trying to see if I can find the soundclip of it on-line somewhere, if I do I’ll post the link.
