I continue to be amazed at the dismissal of recruiting ranking and team rankings by so many on this board. A stupid position to take. Since he has already committed to GU, what difference does it make now?

Rankings are not all that significant as bias does occur as well as the inevitable group of low ranked players that blossom and those higher ranked ones that for whatever reasons do not improve or are not up to the college experience. Movement within the rankings can be an indicator of a player's signs of ability in an AAU tournament or by performance such as Domingo in making and excelling on some National squad. It usually is much easier for a player to move up significantly within various rankings as opposed to a player dropping precipitously once he is highly ranked.

Ranking movement wont change a darn thing about Domingo's game, he'll still be the same player whether he's ranked in the top 10 next week or out of the top 100.

It's a positive feedback loop. The difference between us fans and highly ranked players is that they don't have to look at rankings for a frame of reference. All the kids have played against each other over the course of high school and they know each others' abilities. Their level of familiarity is unlike any non player. A top ten player isn't going to say "oh look at GU they have so and so ranked high that's coming in I should go too"; rather, they are going to say "oh wow look at GU they have so and so coming in, dude can play I matched up with him at peach jam he torched us we could play well together, dude isn't even in the top 60 but should be smh" or "smh dude hopped in the top 25 cause he committed to duke. He has a broke jumper and no handle I've played against him, and he doesn't pass.

They want to go where other top players are going. Why do you think UK gets top ranked recruits all of the time? Yes, a lot of it is the success of the program and the players that go to the league. But the story, year after year, is how UK brings in the top recruiting classes. Positive press can only help a program, and recruits want to be a part of that. The ranking will have no effect on how well Domingo plays at Georgetown. But I fail to see how it's a negative to have higher ranked recruits, and more of them, coming to your program. It can only help. The same is true with this nonsense about how it doesn't matter where the team is ranked in the preseason, or in a poll in the middle of the season. Of course it matters -- not on the court, but in the perception and reputation of the program. If you're ranked highly, your're going to be on Sportscenter more and get more publicity, which only helps bring in better recruits. It's not like the GU program has a lot going for it. Getting highly ranked recruits is one thing that can lead to more recruiting success, which can lead to more success on the court.

And team pre-season rankings and trying to justify how a player is ranked are not at all similar similar situations. Those are two completely different discussions. So the same is not true. Yeah you're right, GU has nothing going for it....

No one ever said being ranked highly is a negative thing, ever. I don't agree with this statement. For many, high rankings breed complacency. Not being rated highly can bring that proverbial 'chip on the shoulder' that drives the work and effort it needs to take to succeed in the long run. On the football field, BSU is a master at taking the overlooked and building a top 5 program with them. (recently published according to the BCS rankings over the last 5 years). Football and basketball are different in part due to the player quantities involved, but I believe the same still applies. How many other players would have been great if they worked as hard as Roy did? How many didn't work that hard because they were already highly rated?

There is no way this is true. Maybe for some recruits but for the most part the rankings justify the excitement. I don't see anyone running away from Pitt because they signed James Robsinson

I don't see anyone running away from Pitt because they signed James Robsinson My point is that the actual players don't necessarily use the rankings as a point of reference. They've been playing against the same players growing up, and know better than us how good someone else actually is and they know their weaknesses. If you can't see the subtleties of my point then okay.

I don't see anyone running away from Pitt because they signed James Robsinson And that's your personal, subjective opinion. Just cause you don't like his game doesn't mean players in his class don't respect his game. He's a very cerebral player that makes others better because he makes winning plays.

Full stat line. Started, 27 minutes (team high), 15 points, 6-12 from the field, 3-7 from three (U.S. only made four threes to Latvia's 12), 6 rebounds (3 offensive), 2 fouls, 1 assist, no turnovers, a steal and a game high two blocks.

A Hoya recruit actually starting for the USA's 17U squad. It has been awhile.
